The subject of delta-8 and the cannabinoids market is an extremely controversial one, and different groups have their own take on the legality of the situation. Individual states have been instituting their own policies to allow or ban the substances; and such is the current case with Virginia, which is trying to ban delta-8 THC through a last minute add-on to a bill. An edit to a Virginia bill by the governor would redefine THC, and illegalize the sale of delta-8 and other cannabinoids outside of dispensaries. Will the edits be nixed? We’ll find out later this month! We’re all about covering the quickly expanding world of cannabis. Keep up by subscribing to the THC Weekly Newsletter, and get your daily dose of industry news, along with access to deals on products like vapes, edibles, and other paraphernalia, and cannabinoid compounds, also. Just remember, *cannabinoid products aren’t for everyone, and no one should use a product they are uncomfortable with! What’s the news?As states legalize cannabis, they are able to institute their own regulations, and these regulations don’t have to be consistent among states, or the federal government (which still holds it all as illegal). In doing so, different states have reacted differently to the cannabinoids market, which includes delta-8 THC, HHC, THCO, and other compounds. The latest to do something about it, is Virginia, with SB 591, a bill to define the upcoming regulated cannabis sales market. On Monday, April 11th, Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin, made edits to SB 591 on the last allowable day he had to approve the bill. These last minute changes redefine the term ‘THC’, though the bill was already approved by the General Assembly with a standing definition. This new definition of ‘THC’ for Virginia, doesn’t specifically mention delta-9, and is worded to ban the sale of isomers like delta-8 outside of legal dispensaries, by grouping THCs together. It should be remembered, that ‘THC’ only refers to the term ‘tetrahydrocannabinols’, and not specifically delta-9 THC. In this way, while why it was done is not explicitly clear, redefining ‘THC’ to include all THCs, does make sense. In reality, this is actually not a major change from the standard definition, but works to emphasize that cannabinoid products can’t be sold illegally. ![]() According to Youngkin, in a statement to WTKR, a Norfolk TV station, “Delta-8 is, in fact, basically marijuana, and marijuana is prohibited from being sold right now.” Should it go into effect, the policy would begin on October 1st, however, it’s not technically a done deal. The legislature is still capable of overriding this decision with a 2/3 vote, which is possible considering these add-ons might not be appreciated. In that sense, the last minute edits are more of a proposal, than the official passage of a law. Whether they stay or not will be decided on April 27th. Technically, Virginia legalized recreational cannabis in 2021, after decriminalizing it the year before. A fully regulated recreational sales market is expected to begin in early 2024. Even so, other aspects, like legal limits and punishments, are already in place. What about smokable hemp products and misdemeanor charges? In regards to the edits, Governor Youngkin explained further to News 3, “There’s not a market, so this was a good clarifying amendment in order to treat Delta-8 along with Delta-9 in the same category, while preserving all the access for CBD products.” However, the edits covered more than just a definition of THC. The Governor’s edits would also ban the sale of edible hemp products in the shape of people, animals, and fruit. While this is undoubtedly a measure to try to dissuade children from wanting to eat said edibles, how useful a stipulation like this is, is hard to say. Luckily, this isn’t that big of a deal, though some of the other add-ons are. Another issue, is the edits work to limit smokable hemp sales to those 21 and above only, which include all CBD products. This means adults 18-21 wouldn’t be able to buy smokable hemp or CBD products, and they’d be treated much the same as regular cannabis. And even more questionable, the edits include charging a misdemeanor offense to people with more than two ounces of cannabis in their possession. Currently, being caught with between an ounce and a pound incurs no more than a $25 civil penalty. This idea to charge for over two ounces as a misdemeanor, came from another recommendation from the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission. It’s a strange direction to go in considering Virginia is a legalized state. To his credit, while Youngkin certainly pulled some interesting last-minute moves in terms of defining THC, limiting smokable hemp products, and criminalizing over two ounces, he also signed a bill that will expand Virginia’s medical marijuana program to allow greater access to patients. This includes removing the requirement for medical cannabis patients to register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, and takes away mandates for active ingredient ratios for medical cannabis products. ![]() Reactions to Virginia proposal to ban delta-8As expected, the hemp industry is none too happy with these edits that redefine THC in Virginia and ban delta-8. According to Virginia Hemp Coalition President Jason Amatucci, “We feel surprised by some of the misguided proposals in the bill. This bill will hurt job creation, hurt the economy, hurt farmers, and take away many legitimate rights for hemp consumers. This sentiment was put more outright by president of the Virginia Healthy Alternatives Association, Yan Gleyzer, who had this to say about it: “Unfortunately, this bill turned from bad to worse… We do have to have some regulations,” but that, “we cannot wipe down the entire market because of one product.” In reaction to the possible further criminalization of over two ounces of cannabis, the group Marijuana Justice answered this with Executive Director Chelsea Higgs Wise saying, “That’s what these new crimes do – they take people from experiencing what could be a $25 ticket to possibly spending time in jail or prison [if they’re] caught more than once with this new misdemeanor.” On April 27th, we’ll find out if Virginia legislators agree with these ‘proposals’. If nothing else, it bears mentioning that waiting till the very last minute to change a bill that was already approved by the government, (with several extreme changes), is questionable in and of itself. How did Virginia legalize recreational cannabis?Virginia is interesting because it’s a southern state which has been leading the charge for cannabis legalization in that region of the country. Virginia made great strides very quickly, going from a more restrictive state, to one of 18 with a recreational legalization. Laws started changing in April 2020, when a decriminalization bill was signed by Governor Ralph Northam. This decriminalized up to one ounce for personal use, and went into effect on July 1st, 2020. It made offenders within the limit subject solely to a $25 fine. In Spring of 2021, this was pushed up a notch when a bill amended by Northam was approved by both sides of Congress, which legalized recreational cannabis with possession up to one ounce. A retail market is slated to start in January of 2024. ![]() Interestingly, Virginia holds a certain designation when it comes to cannabis policies. Though it wasn’t the first state to legalize a comprehensive medical cannabis program, it was the first state to introduce some kind of medical cannabis authorization. This happened back in 1979 when Virginia reassessed its drug laws, leading to the inclusion of cannabis medicines for sufferers of cancer and glaucoma. Truth is, as nothing else changed at that time – like setting up a market, other then the allowance of such medicines, the change went virtually unnoticed for years, and wasn’t really used. Virginia didn’t introduce a comprehensive medical cannabis plan until 2017. ConclusionThere is no legal limit for how much alcohol a person can possess, and, in fact, some people have wine cellars with so many bottles, it could be considered intent to sell. Yet somehow that goes under the radar, and the less dangerous option, cannabis, is still riddled with attempts by government to criminalize activities surrounding it, even in legalized locations!!! What these edits say more than anything, is that the idea of legalization is not being taken seriously. In many places it seems more about bringing in government revenue, than eradicating laws that criminalize the plant. This idea of making it a misdemeanor for over two ounces is a great example of the inconsistency of cannabis legalization, especially as wine cellars are full to the brim. In terms of Virginia and cannabinoids like delta-8, the idea of changing the definition of ‘THC’ is a little strange, but does make sense. Realistically, ‘THC’ never meant ‘delta-9’, so like it or not, including delta-8 and other cannabinoid compounds along with delta-9, isn’t far out at all. Thanks for making it to the site! We’re all over the world of cannabis, with news and fun stories everyday, which you can keep up with by subscribing to THC Weekly Newsletter. Easter HolidaysIf you’re like me, you might forget how and why we celebrate the majority of our international holidays. In fact, it was international name day only a few moments ago and it completely passed me. At christmas or easter or even the newly discovered international name day I usually just enjoy seeing family and, of course, drinking a little more than usual. However, perhaps there is some importance in understanding the history and culture behind these holidays. Especially before we start purchasing some cannabis-infused chocolate goodies. So, what is easter all about? Easter is celebrated around the same time each year, but not always the same day. Easter takes place on the first sunday after the full moon – which usually means on or after the 21st March. This year, Easter finds itself on the 17th April. There’s a few elements to Easter celebrations, and they all revolve around the anniversary of Jesus Christ rising from the dead after being killed three days prior. Different regions/religions may celebrate easter on different days. For example, while Easter in the United States was last Sunday, on the 17th, Easter in places like Greece, Eastern Europe, and Russia, where orthodox Christianity is the more predominant, Easter is today, Sunday the 24th. Holy WeekEaster celebrations can last around a week, depending on how seriously an individual wants to take it. Here is the different parts of Holy Week. ![]() Palm SundayPalm Sunday is the sunday before easter sunday. This is the beginning of easter celebrations. It was the day that Jesus supposedly arrived in Jerusalem, with crowds throwing palm branches at his feet in celebration. Maundy ThursdayMaundy Thursday is the thursday before easter sunday. This was when Jesus had the last supper with his disciples. They sat breaking bread, conversing and drinking some gorgeous old red wine. Good FridayGood Friday is the friday before easter sunday. This was the sad day of Jesus’ death. Jesus Christ was put on the cross and crucified. This is a day of remembering his suffering. Easter SundayEaster Sunday is a day of joy and euphoria. This was the day when Jesus resurrected, after being left for dead in a tomb guarded by Roman soldiers. Why Easter Eggs?Whether your’e a religious person or not, there’s something pleasant in being reminded why certain holidays happen and where certain rituals come from. It’s very easy to forget why we celebrate anything at all. But now you’ve been reminded about the easter holidays, you might still be thinking: what’s the deal with easter eggs? Well, the BBC writes “An egg is a symbol of new life. For Christians, Easter eggs are used as a symbol for the resurrection of Jesus.” Of course now easter eggs have been commercialised into being yummy chocolate eggs. However, there’s still the reminisce of this original belief that eggs highlight Jesus’ return to life after being thought to be dead. Nonetheless, easter eggs are great and when you’ve got a sweet tooth they can be even better. But this article isn’t about just normal chocolate, today we’re going to be looking at the finest cannabis chocolate out there. It’s hard to decipher between the good and the bad, but we’re going to try. There are around 50 little chocolate balls, all containing 2% THC. Whilst these delicious nuggets of chocolate might seem harmless, be careful not to have too many in one sitting – the potency adds up. 5 – DIYProduct: Yours Cannabis: Up to you ![]() If you’re feeling extra adventurous this easter, why not try making your own cannabis easter chocolates. The post Top 5 Cannabis Chocolates for Easter appeared first on CBD Testers. Via https://cbdtesters.co/2022/04/24/top-5-cannabis-chocolates-for-easter/ As part of my job, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to try all sorts of new and interesting cannabis products. Some are actual ‘cannabis’ products – like concentrates, edibles, and flowers – and others are accessories and hardware… the latter being some of my favorites to test out. When it comes to weed, I’m kind of a purist and mostly stick to high-quality flowers or prerolls, and lately, live resin carts since they’re discreet and the taste is very similar to good bud. So, when doing my reviews and trying new things, I often have the most fun with vapes, glassware, and things like that. Items that can enhance my experiences with the products that I am already using. This is exactly what I got with the new Hydro Bubbler from Delta Extrax, which is why I chose to highlight it for my April, ‘Product of the Month’ segment. Additionally, if you act fast, you can still benefit from their 4/20 sale and get this cart bubbler for 40% off the listed price. Also, check out our 420 Deals Page to check out the extended holiday deals. The PositivesLet’s start by focusing on all the positive aspects of this bubbler, and believe me, there are many. This new device, sold by Delta Extrax/Savage Enterprises, is designed specifically to improve the user experience while vaping, by allowing the consumer to take bigger, smoother hits with less effort. The Hydro Bubbler has a simple design that works with 510-threaded cartridges, which is considered to be the industry standard. It features a cylindrical glass bubbler that you insert into a plastic casing along with the cart of your choosing (mine was a Buddies Brand, Liquid Diamond Live Resin Vape Cart in Kush Mints). Just screw in the cart and it’s ready to go. The Hydro Bubbler has a battery power capacity of 650mAh with a micro-USB port for charging (also comes with a short cable), so it lasts quite a while and recharges fast. It can go from dead to fully charged in about an hour, and using it semi-regularly it will last me about 1 week before I need to charge it again. It also offers 4 different voltage settings, up to 4.0V, that are indicated by different colored lights when you take a hit. Inside the chamber, the Hydro Bubbler will fit up to a 15mm diameter cartridge, and is made up of zinc alloy, PCTG, ABS, and glass. The pull is great no matter what I’m vaping with it – I get large, full hits that are incredibly smooth, not harsh in any way, and I experience barely any coughing afterwards. Different compounds do hit differently though. For example, live resin, as well as delta 8 oils, are a bit thicker, so they need to preheat for a little before you start getting those perfect hits. THC-O, on the other hand, is a thinner distillate so it heats up fast and vapes very easily. ![]() Aesthetically, the Hydro Bubbler is an absolutely beautiful piece. It has a sleek, modern look to it, it’s easy to hold in your hand, and it comes in two different colors: black or rainbow (rainbow has a nice, gasoline-stained look to it). I have the Rainbow one, and I love it! This seems to be the more popular choice among female customers. Overall, I enjoy that it feels like a high-quality product; it doesn’t feel cheap like it’s going to fall apart or malfunction after limited use. The NegativesThe negatives are very few, and I wouldn’t really even call them “negatives” per se, but rather, a few things you should make note of when using this device to make sure you don’t experience any minor hang-ups like I did. First, storing the bubbler to prevent clogging. Admittedly, I can be a bit lazy when it comes to my smoking gear. What I mean by that, in regards to cartridge vapes anyway, is that I typically leave my carts attached to the battery until the contents are gone or the device dies. That doesn’t work out very well with the Hydro Bubbler because the carts leak a little bit and clog the device. Then everything needs to be carefully cleaned with rubbing alcohol to remove the stickiness without damaging your cart, or any of the electrical components in the device. To prevent this, it’s best not to leave everything assembled for long periods, and remove the cart from the Hydro Bubbler when not in use. Which brings me to my second point: taking it apart. When doing so, make sure the bubbler piece is completely free of water before moving it at all. The plastic casing creates this sort of vacuum seal so when you pull out the glass tube, water spills out into the chamber and all over your cart. Again, this can be a problem if it ends up damaging any of the electrical components of the bubbler, which would render the entire thing useless. But, aside from these minor issues that are relatively easy to resolve, I have no real complaints about the device. Just make sure to keep the above tips in mind when using, cleaning, and storing your Hydro Bubbler. The post Product of the Month: The Hydro Bubbler From Delta Extrax appeared first on CBD Testers. Via https://cbdtesters.co/2022/04/21/product-of-the-month-delta-extrax-hydro-bubbler/ Although 4/20 has already passed, many companies are extending their deals until the end of the week. Below we have some of our favorite delta 9 THC deals for 4/20, as well as a little more information on the “hemp-derived” aspect of delta 9.Delta-9 THC, usually known as ‘THC’, is the psychoactive cannabinoid coming from cannabis we all know and love. Until last year, the only way to buy Delta-9 THC products, was in a dispensary, but lately, due to the hemp-derived loophole, you can buy it online. Learn more about this infamous stoner holiday, as well as some of our favorite products and activities to celebrate the day with. Hemp-derived delta-9 THCSimply put, hemp-derived THC products are sourced from high-CBD industrial hemp plants, grown for its fiber, seeds, and extraction uses, whereas marijuana-derived THC products come from high-THC marijuana, like what you would find at dispensary. So why does it matter? On a molecular level, both THCs are exactly the same regardless of where they are extracted from. And logically, it makes more sense to extract from plants that already are THC-dominant, rather than using up a bunch of hemp plant matter for the low levels of extractable THC. The reason it makes any difference at all is purely legal. As defined by the 2018 farm bill, the hemp variety of cannabis is legal so long as it contains a maximum of 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis. Anything more than that, and it’s considered marijuana, which is illegal. Therefore, any products created from marijuana-derived THC, are also illegal. By default, that same THC can be extracted from hemp and it’s legal. The implications here are huge for the industry, as it provides a nice legal loophole through which businesses can sell THC products. This is important because statistics show that traditional THC-based cannabis products are still most popular, and consumers have access to a variety of legal THC products, both Delta 8 and Delta 9. What is 420?While not officially a holiday, 420 has become one of the most universally celebrated days – in the sense that it is not specific to any region, ethnic group, gender, or religion/spirituality. Anyone who uses, or even just appreciates cannabis, is welcome to join in the festivities! It’s one of the most inclusive ‘holidays’ that exists. The purpose of 420 is pretty cut and dry: to commemorate weed in all its natural, healing, and stoney glory. Its origins, however, remain a bit hazier. There are so many different 420 stories out there and if you’ve been smoking weed for a while you’ve likely heard quite a few… Some say it’s the number of active chemicals in pot (this is somewhat factual, as there are roughly 400 compounds in the cannabis plant, but the term ‘420’ predates this information). Others believe it’s a code to denote cannabis possession by law enforcement (completely inaccurate, no such code exists). A handful of people think it has to with an older California senate bill called SB 420 (this does exist, but again, 420 came before the bill). And many others believe it has to do with one or more celebrities, typically named are Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Bob Dylan (also incorrect). The real story of how 420 came to be is a little more mundane, but actually pretty cool when you consider that it all started as an inside joke between friends from San Rafael, CA, who would meet after school at 4:20pm to smoke weed and hang out. Trends spread around high schools all the time, but how did the term 420 skyrocket to an internationally known phrase? That took some star power, for which we have the Grateful Dead to thank. The group of teens had close ties to the Dead, and at a concert during Christmas weekend 1990, then High Times reporter Steve Bloom was handed a flyer that read, “We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais.” Once High Times printed a story about the event, accompanied by a photo of the flyer, it was game over and 420 spread like wildfire. A Bit More About Disposable VapesAs the name implies, Disposable Vapes are just that, vape devices that come prefilled and you toss them out when they’re out of liquid. They are rechargeable, and some are actually refillable, but you can only do that once or twice and none of the disposables on this particular list can be refilled. I’m a big fan of disposables because they are so, incredibly discreet. As some of you know, I moved from the fully-legal state of California to one of the most restrictive prohibition states in the nation, Indiana. Things I used to take for granted, like simply smoking a joint on a beautiful hike through nature, are things I can no longer enjoy… or if I do choose to get high on my adventures anyway, I need to be much more cautious about it. What may have been a warning to put the weed away in CA could be a felony arrest here in Indiana. When I have a THC disposable with me, I don’t have to worry about getting in trouble. I can take them anywhere, they come in a variety of flavors and don’t smell at all like weed smoke, and some compounds, like HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) don’t even show up on drug tests. For an old-fashioned flower smoker like myself, vaping in general leaves something to be desired; but in my opinion, disposables make it that much more appealing. What is also interesting is that, with vaping, you can get a lot of different propriety blends of cannabinoids, rather than just Delta 9. Many disposables come prefilled with liquid containing numerous different combinations of Delta 8 THC, Delta 10 THC, THCO, THCV, CBN, CBG, CBC, and more. Remember to subscribe to The THC Weekly Newsletter to claim all of our amazing holiday deals! What is Delta 8 THC?To understand the difference between Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC, you’ll have to think back to chemistry class. Admittedly, that wasn’t my best subject, but I do remember some of the basics. One of the things that always stuck was how minor chemical changes could create a completely different compound. For example, O2 vs O3. When we breathe, we are breathing in O2, or molecular oxygen, comprised of two oxygen molecules held together by a covalent bond. Add one more oxygen molecule to that and you now have O3, or ozone, which is a highly reactive gas that can cause serious health complications if we breathe it in. Fortunately for us, the differences between D8 and D9 aren’t that striking. Delta-8 THC only has some minor chemical differences from Delta-9. It also has some psychoactive effects, although it’s less intense than D9. Delta-8 is only present in trace amounts in cannabis plants, so to utilize it, this compound needs to be extracted and isolated. As far as medical benefits of Delta 8 THC, there are quite a few that are of particular interest. Numerous studies (mostly Israeli conducted by Raphael Mechoulam and associates) dating back to the early 1970s indicate that Delta-8 is an extremely powerful effects on the immune system. It has also been observed shrinking tumors and completely eliminating nausea in patients who were sick from other medications. What is THC-O?In short, THC-O is an analog of THC, meaning is has a similar chemical structure but, as is the case in chemistry, minor differences often lead to substantial changes. THC-O is short for THC-O-Acetate, or THC Acetate/ATHC. Most of the time you’ll see it written and referred to as THC-O. It’s important not to confuse ATHC with THCA, the parent molecule of THC which found in raw plants that have not yet been decarboxylated. In tetrahyrdocannabinolic acid (THCA) the A stands for acid, NOT acetate like with ATHC. THCA can be converted to THC-O, but THCA is a natural phytocannabinoid and THC-O is not. THC-O is a synthetic cannabinoid that can only be produced in a laboratory setting, preferably by an experienced chemist. With the rise of DIY technologies, it can be tempting to try and make THC-O yourself, but the process can be difficult and quite dangerous, so it’s best left to the professionals. Because it is an artificially produced cannabinoid, what you see is what you get – meaning all you get is THC-O and none of the beneficial terpenes and flavonoids that are found in natural oils. This is an obvious issue for whole-plant advocates and proponents of the entourage effects, but when it comes to pharmaceutical formulations, isolated cannabinoids are always preferred. The purity of these compounds means that 1 milligram of isolate equals measures out to exactly 1 milligram of cannabinoid, whereas 1 milligram of full-spectrum plant extract might have 0.5 milligrams of THC, 0.3 milligrams of CBD, and 0.2 combination of other terpenes and compounds. This makes isolate very easy to use for specific dosing and product production. According to Serge Chistov, the inventor of Nanobidiol Technology, says his team has found a safe and efficient method to acetylate THC using only approved solvents. Chistov says his team “developed the analytical standard for testing for THC-O, as well as being in the final stages of introducing products to retail outlets.” So, if everything stays on track, the goal is to see THC-O therapeutics relatively soon. The post Top 420 Deals: $5 Vape Carts – Delta 8 and THCO appeared first on CBD Testers. Via https://cbdtesters.co/2022/04/19/get-5-vape-carts-from-now-until-4-20-delta-8-and-thco/ April 20th, commonly referred to as just ‘420’, is right around the corner and stoners worldwide are prepping. For some that means stocking up on their favorite products while dispensaries and online retailers are offering some of their best deals of the year. For others it may consist of making weed-centric plans with friends. Some might plan on going to a legalization rally or protest. Regardless of how one plans on celebrating, the main takeaway here is that people across the globe will be observing this holiday. While not officially a holiday, 420 has become one of the most universally celebrated days – in the sense that it’s not specific to any region, ethnic group, gender, or religion/spirituality. Anyone who uses or even just appreciates cannabis is welcome to join in the festivities! It’s one of the most inclusive ‘holidays’ that exists. The purpose of the holiday is pretty cut and dry: to commemorate weed in all its natural, healing, high-inducing, stonerific glory. It’s origins, however, remain a bit hazier. There are so many different 4/20 stories out there and if you’ve been a cannabis user for a while you’ve likely heard quite a few… Some say it’s the number of active chemicals in weed (this is somewhat factual, as there are roughly 400 compounds in the cannabis plant, but the term ‘420’ predates this information). Others believe it’s a code to signify cannabis possession by law enforcement (completely inaccurate, no such code exists). A handful of people think it has to with an older California senate bill called SB 420 (this does exist, but again, 420 came before the bill). And many others believe it has to do with one or more celebrities, typically named are Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Bob Dylan (also incorrect). The real story of how 420 came to be is a bit more mundane, but actually pretty cool when you consider that it all started as an inside joke between friends. Who is this infamous group of forward-thinking youth, you may be asking? Well, this is where things get a bit confusing. Two rival groups, the Waldos and the Bebes, claim to have coined the term; and this seemingly small disagreement has spawned into a decades-long dispute (one that is still ongoing might I add) over the true history behind 420. We cover everything under the sun in the world of weed, and you can follow along by signing up to the THC Weekly Newsletter, for a daily dose of industry news. Plus, get direct access to deals on products like vapes, edibles, and other paraphernalia, and on cannabinoid compounds, as well. Check out our 420 deals to get the most out of April 20th, and to ensure a blissful and sky-high holiday! The Well-Known Waldos StoryThe most popular 420 origin story is that of the Waldos. The first thing to keep in mind about this story, is that even though we write it as a calendar date, ‘4/20’, and it is now celebrated on that day, it really should be displayed as a time, ‘4:20’. Now, this particular narrative follows a group of five teens from San Rafael, California, who were appropriately nicknamed “the Waldos” due to their preferred hang out spot – a wall outside of their high school. In the fall of 1971, the Waldos heard about a coast guard member who planted some cannabis but was no longer able to tend to it. Every day after school, they would pile into a car, smoke some buds, and search the Point Reyes Forest for this legendary crop (they called this their daily “safari”. Their daily meeting time? 4:20 p.m. They never did find the elusive crop, but they did however start a trend at their high school. The phrase “420” quickly spread around the student body because it allowed teens to talk about cannabis openly while their parents and teachers were none the wiser. Trends spread around high schools all the time, but how did the 420 skyrocket to an internationally known phrase? That took some star power, for which we have the Grateful Dead to thank. The Waldos had connections with the Grateful Dead. Mark Gravitch’s father managed the band’s real estate and Dave Reddix’s older brother was good friends with Phil Lesh, the Dead’s bassist. ![]() At a Dead concert during Christmas weekend 1990, then High Times reporter Steve Bloom was handed a flyer that read, “We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais.” Once High Times printed the story, accompanied by a photo of the flyer, it was game over and 420 spread like wildfire. The official story connecting the Waldos to Grateful Dead to 420 came out in 1998. The Alternative Bebes’ 420 TaleAs far as 420 stories go, the Waldos one is the most well-known and widely accepted. But over the years, another group of friends has come out to oppose the Waldos’ account and offer up their own version of events. According to members of the group, the Bebes, who were led by Brad Bann (AKA the Bebe), are the ones who invented the term. Their explanation is quite simple: One day after school, they got together to smoke bongs and record music, the time was exactly 4:20pm. During the session, Bann began to “channel his inner Abraham Lincoln” by singing “four score and twenty years ago”, referencing the time they had met to smoke and because he was known for his deep, booming, Lincoln-like voice. As per the Bebes, this occurred in 1970, which is before the Waldos’ story. Interestingly, the Bebes and Waldos knew each other rather well. Bebe Brad Bann and Waldo Steve Capper were friends for many years before drifting apart in their teens. Additionally, there were a handful of ‘neutral party’ floater friends who hung out with both groups, so terminology could have easily spread between cliques. “We had what we called charter Waldos — sort of alternate Waldos, so if one Waldo was gone they could fill in,” said Capper. “They had the same sense of humor; they knew all our gags, all our impersonations, all our little catchphrases.” Evidence to the contraryOver the last couple of decades there has been an ongoing feud between these two groups going on in the press. Granted, it’s not something that’s grabbing headlines all year, but every 4/20, it comes up. In the early 2000s, the Bebes first came out with their counter to the Waldos’ story. But, anyone can say whatever they want about anything, that doesn’t necessarily make it true, so the fact that Bebes publicly disputed the Waldos’ story is not enough to confirm validity. However, Bebes members are adamant that they are the ones who devised ‘420’ as a catchphrase, and adding insult to injury, Brad Bann also claims to be the first one to give the Waldos their infamous nickname (ouch). Obviously, the Waldos have not been happy about this, and the debate rages on. Either way, the term gained momentum throughout the 80s and 90s. ![]() Remember that High Times flyer from 1990 that I mentioned earlier? Well, the following year, High Times published a follow up article that included an image of that flyer and some information about how ‘420’ came to be… but they got the story wrong. The High Times story claims that the Waldos got it from a police code for smoking pot, but we know that nothing like that ever existed. This actually makes a point for the Bebes, assuming they actually started it and the Waldos never really knew the real story behind it, then just gave a fake story about the police code before realizing that could be factchecked and changing their story to something more casual. Either that, or the High Times writer/editor who worked on the story got their information mixed up. Conversely, the Waldos claim to have “multiple pieces of physical evidence / proof” that they were the first to use the ‘420’ in relation to cannabis. On their website, the report having documents and 420-embellished items that are “preserved in a high-security bank safety deposit vault, they have been and will continue to be available for inspection/documentation by Official Press.” Final thoughtsWhile everyone credits the Waldo’s connections with the Grateful Dead for popularizing 420, the stories diverge from there. The Waldos did come out with a story first, and they also have more physical, documented evidence of their use of the word dating back to the early 1970s, but again, none of that is concrete evidence that they invented the word, only that they were quick to utilize it conversationally and adorn all their gear with the term. There are some solid considerations that make the Bebes’ story plausible as well. If you’re dying to learn more about this topic, each group has a documentary in the works. Release dates TBA, but it will be interesting to see if the full truth behind the origins of 420 ever comes to light. What is 420?For some of you 420 will be an event that you await and long for every year, for others it will be an occasion that you know about but don’t care much for, and for others, it might be something you’ve literally never heard of. Well, wherever you sit in the acknowledgement scale, 420 is happening and there’s no doubt that it’s quite the spectacle. But what actually is it? 420 is a cannabis holiday that occurs every year on the 20th of April. Much like many other holidays, some people decide to celebrate it, and others don’t. Of course 420 is referring to the month of April (4th) and the date (20th). The reason for the name ‘420’ is due to the USA’s ordering of the month before day. This is because the event originates from America. If it had originated in the UK it would probably be referred to as ‘204’ – doesn’t really have the same ring to it, does it? The actual reason for the name 420 has a far deeper and interesting history, but we’ll get on to that later. The cannabis holiday is a day of celebration and political activism. Not only do people get together to smoke, vape and digest cannabis, there are also usually elements of political conversations and collectivisation too. Music will usually be blaring, the smell of cannabis in the air, and perhaps some light or deep chats about the legalization of weed and the political issues of today. 420 is innately political. In its essence, it has to be. Vox writes: “In the 1970s, 4/20 was part of a smaller counterculture movement that embraced marijuana as a symbol to protest against broader systemic problems in the US, like overseas wars and the power of corporations in America.” Why is Cannabis Political?Cannabis has always been political, even if those who enjoy it don’t decide to discuss it. The fact is, cannabis has been demonized and marginalised as a drug for centuries, and therefore anyone who uses it often experiences the same vilification. Who What Why writes: “Why are certain drugs vilified while others are not? The answer often hinges on the race (and social class) the drug in question is associated with. In the case of marijuana in the US, the negative connotations took hold right from the start. This led to laws that criminalized the use and distribution of the plant almost everywhere in the Land of the Free.” If you drink alcohol, you’re aware it’s legal and therefore don’t consider its legality. However, cannabis has always been seen as the ‘revolutionary drug’. In addition, cannabis also triggers effects of open-mindedness, thoughtfulness and unity, which can help people to think of modern issues in a more empathetic way. For example, during the famous Woodstock festivals of the 60s, people would smoke cannabis, listen to political musicians like Bob Dylan, and protest against the Vietnam War and Civil Rights issues. Therefore, it’s important to realise that 420 is about a lot more than just celebration and enjoying cannabis. 420 Origin TheoriesFunnily enough, the actual birthplace and origin of 420 is still yet to be 100% confirmed. There are many theories – some definitely more believable than others. However, ultimately, you can make your own mind up. Here’s a list of some of the potential origin stories of 420, ordered from most believable to least believable. Read with caution. California School KidsOne of the most believable theories of the 420 origin is this one. Steven Hager from the High Times made the claim that 420 originated from a tradition that a group of California high school students started in the 70s. This tradition would have them all meet up at 4:20pm after school and smoke cannabis together. As this tradition became more widely known, people began translating it into a calendar date: 20th April. And thus the cannabis holiday began. Bob DylanThen things become strange. This theory believes that 420 originates from a Dylan song. His song ‘Rainy Day Women number 12&35’ has a refrain in it that reads: ‘Everybody must get stoned’. And guess what? What’s 12 x 35? It’s 420. Is this a bit far fetched? Potentially. But, Bob Dylan was a big cannabis and political activist so maybe there could be some truth to it. Active ChemicalsAn even more far fetched theory believes that the 420 origin comes from there being exactly 420 compounds in cannabis. Whilst there are around 400 compounds – give or take – it has been proven that there isn’t exactly 420. So this theory is unlikely. HitlerThe weirdest and perhaps worst theory for the origin of 420 is based around Adolf Hitler. The 20th April also happens to be the Nazi leaders birthday. There’s little evidence that Hitler was an advocate of cannabis, so this theory is basically pointless. But it’s a stupidly funny one nonetheless. Hyde Park & 420So, now we’ve covered a little more about 420 as an event, let’s zoom in on what happens on the 20th April in Hyde Park. Hyde Park is the largest park in central London, minutes away from Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. It’s famous for its speaker’s corner where famous figures like Lenin, Karl Marx and George Orwell were known to speak freely there. This political activist history is still part of its DNA and 420 is no different. The Labour MP, Jeff Smith, said this about cannabis activists at a 420 event: “Our cannabis laws are not fit for purpose and the cannabis using community has an important role to play in bringing about the kind of change we’re seeing in other countries and U.S. states. It’s time to end the stigmatisation and criminalisation of people who consume cannabis, and adopt a harm reduction focused approach. I’m impressed by the dynamism of campaigners” In the UK, it is illegal to use any cannabis products containing above 0.2% THC. CBD is legal and medical cannabis is slowly becoming more widely used, but at a slow rate. Cannabis is the most used drug in the UK and, despite its stagnant and unprogregressive laws, around 60% of Brits support cannabis legalization. That’s why events like 420 at Hyde Park are an absolute spectacle. Funky-smelling smoke looms above thousands of like-minded cannabis lovers as they play music, lay in the sun, and connect. On the whole, people are free to consume cannabis at these events if they do it respectfully. It’s considered to be a peaceful protest. CBD Sloth writes: “If you have a very small quantity, which broadly means less than an ounce (28g), then the police will normally accept it is just for personal use and will issue with a warning and potentially an on-the-spot fine. It largely depends on how relaxed the officer is, if you’re polite then it should normally be just a warning.’ The extent of the crowds would make it very difficult for the police to arrest everyone – especially with how peaceful the entire atmosphere is. As many cannabis-lovers will know, it chills rather than triggers aggression. So, for those attending, they can bask in the knowledge that today, in this park, they are free from the UK cannabis laws. A rather rebellious young adult spoke to Vice News about his 420 experience and said: “I’ve come down here to smoke, bro…I want to do it in the police’s faces… the amount of times I’ve been nicked, this is my chance to get back at them.” Conclusion420 is an international celebration for cannabis lovers all over the world to dance, chill, listen to music and take part in some political activism. Anyone who believes that 420 isn’t in any way political, simply does not understand it. Hyde Park has and always will be a major hotspot for 420 celebrations and if you’re ever around London on the 20th April – come on down. You won’t be disappointed.
