The role of the monarch in Britain is a contentious one. In 2022, around 55% of the population believed that it was ‘important’ to have a monarchy in the UK. However, the majority of these people were over the age of 65. What does that tell us? Well, a major segment of the nation conversely thinks that the concept of being born into that much wealth and privilege is a backwards tradition. And despite the fact that the royal family has very little power nowadays, it sends the wrong message. But if you could be a member of the royal family, would you? Many will probably say yes to this, but perhaps there’s more pain than might be originally thought. Prince Harry, who is now gaining the reputation as a royal-family-reject, has spoken out about his experiences as a monarch and his potential drug habits. In this article we’re going to dissect his words, and try to understand if being part of the royal family really is as smooth sailing as it looks. The Life of Prince HarryPrince Harry, born Henry Charles Albert David on September 15, 1984, is a member of the British royal family. He is the younger son of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and the late Princess Diana. Yes, I know, it all sounds very English, doesn’t it? Anyway, he was born in London, and spent his early childhood in Kensington Palace. His parents’ marriage was fraught with difficulties, and they separated in 1992 when he was only eight years old. In August 1997, Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris. Her death had a profound impact on Prince Harry, who was just 12 years old at the time. Many have overlooked this experience, as if losing a mother at this age as a royal would somehow be less traumatic. But when looking at how Harry has led his life, it seems that perhaps he may have shared a similar anti-establishment mentality to that of his mother: Diana. In fact, the princess, when she was alive, would consistently vote for the abolition of the monarchy. The Daily Express writes: “The Princess of Wales did claim that she did not want to destroy the monarchy as that “is my children’s future”, but she claimed reform was needed to change the remote relationship between the Royal Family and the public.” This disjunct between the monarchy and the public is the major reason why the royal family have made themselves slightly scarce over the last few decades. You can’t abolish what you can’t see, can you? In other words, who’s going to throw out an old china plate that looks nice, quaint, and brings tourists to your house? It’s not hurting anyone! However, this then relies on the royal family being almost personality-less. This, perhaps, is something that Harry especially has found hard. After studying at Eton school, playing rugby, and joining the British army in Afghanistan in 2007, Harry began to look beyond his simple life as a royal. The Life of a RoyalBeing a member of the British royal family is often seen as a position of great privilege and wealth, with access to the finest things in life and the ability to travel the world. However, the reality of life as a royal is not always so glamorous. Ultimately, there is no point trying to persuade someone that living as a royal is not as good as living as someone who is struggling. Of course not. But, perhaps by seeing the downside of being part of a monarchy, we can finally decide to abolish the idea entirely. So let’s take a look at some potential difficulties. DifficultiesOne of the biggest difficulties of being part of the royal family is the intense media scrutiny that comes with the position. Members of the royal family are constantly in the public eye, with every move they make and every outfit they wear scrutinised by the media. This can be extremely stressful and invasive, particularly for those who value their privacy. Princess Diana, for example, famously struggled with the intense media attention she received throughout her life. Harry was much the same. The Independent writes: “In his late teens, Prince Harry was viewed as something of a royal rebel as he was pictured on several occasions partying and leaving nightclubs early in the morning.” Another difficulty of being part of the royal family is the loss of personal freedom. Members of the royal family are expected to adhere to strict protocols and rules, and their personal lives are often subject to the approval of the Queen and other senior members of the family. They are expected to uphold a certain image and represent the monarchy at all times, which can be limiting and frustrating. It’s the same with any especially famous person. This was evident with Harry’s relationship, when compared to that of Prince William’s (his older brother). When William married Kate in 2011, the world celebrated a new princess. However, when Harry and Meghan began to date, the royal family did not show the same support. Meghan did not fit the stereotypical princess model that they so desperately wanted. In a 2019 interview, Meghan says: “I have said for a long time to H… [Harry], It’s not enough to just survive something. That’s not the point of life. You have to thrive. You have got to feel happy… I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a ‘stiff upper lip.’ I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.” Six months after this interview, in January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their plans to step down from their senior royal duties. The decision was made in part due to the intense media scrutiny and public pressure they had experienced, as well as their desire for financial independence. They have since relocated to the United States and have been involved in various charitable and business ventures. The Memoir: Spare“Spare”, Prince Harry’s recent memoir, was released in 2023. In this book, Harry is unflinchingly honest, opening up about his difficulties being part of the royal family, and how this may have led to him using recreational substances. One of the main reasons for the writing of this book, according to the prince himself, was to explain why he and Meghan felt the need to leave the monarchy entirely. But also – as his mother had wanted all those years before her tragic car crash in Paris in August 1997 – to bridge the gap between the public and the royals. According to Harry, he only cried once after his mother’s death. Despite the fact that he was the youthful age of 12. This, he stated, was one of the reasons he turned to recreational drugs. To open himself up emotionally. After turning to alcohol for many years, the prince eventually began to experiment with harder drugs. He has admitted to taking cocaine and cannabis. ITV news writes: “(Cocaine) didn’t do anything for me, it was more a social thing and gave me a sense of belonging for sure, I think it probably also made me feel different to the way I was feeling, which was kind of the point… marijuana is different, that actually really did help me” Prince Harry admitted to not feeling the same effects as his other friends when consuming coke- the feeling of happiness. As he says, it made him feel different, which was enough at first, but soon became dull. That was when he began to look into psychedelic substances, including ayahuasca and psilocybin. The Independent quotes Harry, saying: “I would never recommend people to do this recreationally. But doing it with the right people if you are suffering from a huge amount of loss, grief or trauma, then these things have a way of working as a medicine… For me, they cleared the windscreen, the windshield, the misery of loss. They cleared away this idea that I had in my head that I needed to cry to prove to my mother that I missed her. When in fact, all she wanted was for me to be happy.” Prince Harry has since praised the substance, calling it a fundamental part of his life that helped change him for the better. SignificanceIt cannot be underestimated the power that this type of honesty can have; both for good and for bad. Many traditionalists have reacted angrily, not understanding why the prince can’t simply do his duties, enjoy his privilege and keep quiet. Anti-monarchs have also spoken out, seeing it all as a pathetic cry for help by a very rich man. But of course, Prince Harry has his supporters. For me, I believe that it’s important that we rid the royal family of this deistic reputation. As if they are untouchable, omnipotent, un-human. They are just people at the end of the day, very rich people. By being honest about his own drug use, his feelings towards his family, and his trauma – Harry has taken the monarchy off their pedestal. I think this is positive. Hopefully, in the end, it will be seen as a step towards the eventual end of the royal family entirely in Britain. In my opinion, everyone will be better off. Hello readers. It is recognizable by its distinctive bright red cap with white spots. Unlike psilocybin mushrooms, which is a controlled substance, Amanita muscaria contains ibotenic acid and muscimol, which are legal psychoactive compounds. Muscimol is the primary psychoactive compound found in Amanita muscaria mushrooms. It is responsible for the unique effects experienced when consuming these mushrooms. As a GABA receptor agonist, muscimol interacts with the brain’s neurotransmitters, leading to potential relaxation, calming effects, and altered states of consciousness. However, it’s important to note that the effects of psychoactive compounds can vary among individuals. Ibotenic acid is a powerful neurotoxin that can cause a range of effects, from mild agitation to seizures or even death in high doses. However, when dried or heated, ibotenic acid is converted into muscimol, and that’s why the process of preparing Amanita edibles usually involves drying, heating and only then consuming. Microdose Amanita MuscariaWhile the Amanita muscaria does not contain psilocybin, the compound typically associated with the benefits of microdosing, it contain muscimol which makes it very attractive. It’s important to note that there is far less research on microdosing Amanita muscaria when compared to psilocybin or LSD. However, as this product have been used for hundreds of years, and perhaps even more, it is safe to believe that microdose Amanita Muscaria will soon become a common practice, among the followers of the many ways for self-discovery and enlightment. Potential Benefits & RisksWhile research is only in its early stages, historical usages and anecdotal reports from individuals who have tried to microdose Amanita muscaria often mention improved mood, increased energy, and heightened creative thinking. Some users have reported a reduction in their symptoms of depression and anxiety, while others have noticed improved focus and cognitive function. Due to the sedative effects of muscimol, some users find Amanita muscaria helpful in managing insomnia or other sleep disorders. The muscimol may also interact with GABA receptors in the brain, which can lead to feelings of relaxation and calmness. The consumption of Amanita muscaria is not without risks. The mushroom’s psychoactive compounds, particularly ibotenic acid, can cause adverse effects ranging from mild symptoms like nausea, dizziness, and incoordination, to more severe ones such as hallucinations, agitation, and seizures. However, it’s worth noting that when ibotenic acid is dried or heated, it converts into Muscimol, which is considered to have milder effects on the body. Moreover, as with any product we use, whether it’s sugar, tobacco, coffee, smartphones, TV, or drugs, there is a potential risk of developing tolerance or dependency when its use is abused. It is important to approach the consumption of any substance with moderation and mindfulness. Preparation and Consumption MethodsAs we have discussed, proper preparation of Amanita muscaria is crucial due to the presence of ibotenic acid. The mushrooms should be dried, heated, or both to safely convert ibotenic acid into muscimol. Traditionally, the mushrooms are dried in the sun or over a fire, but nowadays, you can also use methods like drying in an oven at a minimal temperature with an open door or placing them near a heat source. However, it is important to avoid excessive heat, as even when making tea, the water should not exceed 170 degrees Fahrenheit (77 degrees Celsius). Once dried, the mushrooms can be consumed as they are, brewed into a tea, or used to prepare a tincture. Microdosing typically entails ingesting a minute quantity of the mushroom, commonly in the form of a powdered substance enclosed in capsules. As is the case with any consumption, it is vital to commence with a low dose to gauge individual tolerance, gradually augmenting it if needed. Following the fundamental principle of ‘Start Low and Grow Slow‘ is advised for all substances, including when you microdose with Muscimol gummies. The post Muscimol Gummies: A New Way to Microdose Amanita Muscaria appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/14/muscimol-gummies-a-new-way-to-microdose-amanita-muscaria/ The death of one of Hollywood’s greatest actors, Heath Ledger, took everyone by surprise on the 22nd January 2008. Ledger was a highly acclaimed actor known for his transformative performances and dedication to his craft. Movies, such as, “Brokeback Mountain,” “The Dark Knight,” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” are all considered masterpieces in their own way. The Australian actor was known to go above and beyond for his roles, using method acting to truly become the character. However, his tragic death at the youthful age of 28 left fans and critics questioning the role that method acting may have played in his untimely passing. Was it drugs or method acting that really brought about the demise of a true acting star? Let’s delve into this. Who was Heath Ledger?Well, if you’ve been living under a rock or were born after the year 2000, then maybe Heath Ledger’s life and incredible acting career may have passed you by. But either way, lets dive a little into his life before his unfortunate demise in 2008. Heath Ledger was born in Perth, Australia, in 1979. He began his acting career in the early 1990s, appearing in Australian television shows such as “Sweat” and “Home and Away.” In 1998, he made his feature film debut in “Blackrock.” However, it wasn’t until his breakthrough performance in the 1999 teen comedy “10 Things I Hate About You” that he gained international recognition. Over the next few years, Ledger continued to establish himself as one of Hollywood’s rising stars, with critically acclaimed performances in films such as “Monster’s Ball” and “The Patriot.” However, it was his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee’s 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain” that earned him widespread acclaim and his first Academy Award nomination. Ang Lee, the successful director of Brokeback Mountain, spoke about Ledger in the Empire: “Heath Ledger was a brilliant young actor. God only knows what he would have achieved later in life… I both understood, and cherished, Heath’s quietness, the subtlety of the moment. We are all very lucky we were able to make movies with an actor of that calibre. He had a God-given gift.” Ledger certainly had a talent that not everyone in the acting world shared. He was a mesmerising, creative and bold performer. This was especially shown in his performance as the Joker in the “The Dark Knight” trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s incredible take on the batman franchise. It was this performance that won him “Best Supporting Actor” at the Oscars. Sadly, Ledger was unable to physically receive the award, as he died a few months after filming. On the 22nd January 2008, the actor was found dead by his masseuse and housekeeper in his bed. History quotes the coroner’s report: “The report stated that he died of an accidental “abuse of prescription medications” that included commonly known painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills.” The cause of death was determined to be an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, including oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine. But was it an accident? Was it self-inflicted? As with the death of all famous icons throughout time, this led to many wondering what the real reason behind the tragic event was. Ledger’s Relationship with DrugsDespite his success, Heath Ledger struggled with substance abuse for many years. He used a great amount of prescription drugs, mainly to treat his sleep problems and pneumonia. It was also believed he had a cocaine and heroin addiction – but these are only rumours. The facts are that Heath Ledger died due to a fatal concoction of legal substances that really should not be mixed. In an interview with Ledger’s father, he quoted a conversation that happened between Ledger’s sister and Heath himself: “The last conversation Kate had with him was this discussion about his medications and she warned him, ‘You can’t mix drugs that you don’t know anything about…He said ‘Katie, Katie, I’ll be fine.’’ He then goes on to say… “There is pressure on everybody, especially young people, to perform and to keep going… He was a young guy that travelled all the time for work. Even as a 2-year-old, he hardly ever slept. He was trying to work and travel and do everything in a short space of time.” Whether used for medical or recreational purposes, you can make the argument that any use of drugs is for some sort of treatment. Whether it be boredom, depression or whatever it is. Some people would like to simplify Heath Ledger’s death, stating it as an accident. Of course it may have been that – who can truly tell? But even so, Ledger’s stress, lack of sleep, or need for those substances, may not have been an accident. Why did Heath Ledger Die?Let’s take a look at some of the key talking points when thinking about the death of one of the world’s greatest young actors. Method ActingMethod acting is an approach to acting that involves immersing oneself in a character’s emotions and experiences in order to deliver a more authentic and compelling performance. This technique is often associated with great actors like Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Daniel Day Lewis and has been praised for its ability to bring realism to the stage and screen. Heath Ledger was known for his dedication to his craft and his commitment to fully embodying the characters he portrayed on screen. This dedication was evident in his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight – he completely transformed himself. In preparation for the role, Ledger reportedly locked himself in a hotel room for a month, delving deep into the character’s psyche and creating the Joker’s sinister mannerisms and vocalizations. He also kept a diary in which he wrote down the character’s thoughts and emotions, allowing himself to fully inhabit the role. There is no question that a long period of delving into the sinister world of the Joker cannot be an entirely joyful experience but, then again, people forget how much of a profession Heath Ledger was. Every actor has their own methods, the ones that work for them and Ledger was no different. There seems to be a romanticized view on the world of method acting, as if it has the power to kill a person. Of course no one can say for certain how Heath Ledger felt after becoming the Joker, but there are far more likely factors to consider. For instance, the loneliness and relentless hours of acting can be a hard pill to swallow. Staying in a hotel, in the middle of nowhere, with no friends or family for months on end, going on and off set – it can’t do wonders for morale, can it? For me, this is a more likely reason for his potential drug use than any method acting argument. FameAnother undeniable factor to consider is the world of fame. Many believe that an actor’s life begins when they become famous, but in many ways it ends. Of course being famous can be an incredible experience, but it can also be incredibly stressful. The constant scrutiny of the media and public can take a toll on an individual’s mental health and well-being. In addition, the expectations and demands of the entertainment industry can be overwhelming, leaving many celebrities feeling exhausted and burnt out. For some, turning to drugs can be a way to cope with the pressures of fame. Drugs can provide a temporary escape from the stresses of life, allowing individuals to forget their problems and relax. However, this relief is often short-lived, and the long-term consequences of drug use can be severe. Look at the likes of Elton John, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Fans usually think that fame brings you closer to people – due to the fact that the whole world knows who you are – but in reality it isolates you more than ever before. It’s likely that as Heath Ledger became more famous, he was disappointed by its lack of real meaning. DrugsThe genuine, 100%, certain reason for Heath Ledger’s death was drugs. Factually speaking, the actor died from the wrong substances reacting in the wrong way to end his life. However, I think it’s fair to say that the actor was struggling with some sort of drug use problem. These problems are not self-made, they are caused. Far Out Magazine writes: “In a 2007 interview with The New York Times, Ledger had revealed that he was heavily dependent on drugs such as Ambien for sleep since the production process of The Dark Knight had taken a heavy toll on him” Some will take this to mean that the role itself had exhausted him, which is probably true. Any great actor will give a lot of themselves to a role, leaving them with little left in themselves. However, it also could mean the relentless process of filmmaking – with long hours and hotel sleeps. Whichever way you look at it, it seems that it’s pointless trying to pinpoint one main reason for the death of Heath Ledger. Perhaps it was just a concoction of many. ConclusionHeath Ledger was a legend, there’s no doubt about it. If he had stayed alive he would have certainly gone on to do unbelievable things in the acting world. However, we should count ourselves lucky that we were still able to witness the masterpieces that he did make during his 28 years of life. Since his death, many have debated what the cause of it was. However, it seems that we must put that to rest and allow it to be seen – like most things – as a nuanced situation. It may have been an accident but, then again, why did he need so many substances in the first place? It may have been his intense method of acting but, then again, what about the relentless hours and isolation of being an actor? Perhaps we’ll never know. What is for sure, is that Heath Ledger was a legend and no debate around his death will ever stop that from being true. Hello readers. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/13/the-death-of-heath-ledger-drugs-or-method-acting/ Some states get a lot of attention when they pass marijuana legalization bills, and some go more under the radar. The latter is the case with Delaware, which quietly passed a recreational bill last month. Read on for details. Delaware recreational cannabis legalizationDelaware is a pretty small state, which might explain why its recreational cannabis legalization happened rather quietly. Regardless of size, however, Delaware just joined the ranks of the legal states in America. With this passage, Delaware is the 22nd state (plus DC) to pass a recreational legalization. And the 23rd state to have some kind of measure for recreational use, when accounting for Minnesota. The whole thing happened pretty quickly. On January 20th, 2023, two bills were introduced at the same time in the House of Representatives: HB1 and HB2. The former is a direct legalization bill, while the latter institutes regulation, including tax rates. They were approved within two days of each other in the House, first HB1 on March 7th, and HB2 on March 9th. The legalization bill passed with a vote of 28-13, and the regulation bill 27-13. On March 28th, the bills both passed the Senate in the state, with the legalization bill getting a vote of 16-4, and the regulation bill getting 15-5. From there they were sent to Governor John Carney’s desk on April 11th and 14th respectively. Carney stated on April 21st that both laws would pass through without his signature or veto. This is because Carney himself doesn’t technically support a legalization, but also knows that it must happen. On April 23rd, the legalization went into effect. Previous attemptsDelaware did attempt legalization bills before, but to no avail. One was in 2017, but it could not gain enough votes. Another was put forth in 2020, but also failed to get enough votes. This was at the height of Corona, and the bill’s writer, Rep. Ed Osienski, reworked it and resubmit it in 2021. Then in May 2022, the state’s General Assembly did actually pass a legalization bill on May 24th of that year. Carney vetoed the bill, and the House could not override it. This helps explain why Carney allowed the new bill to pass without his signature. It perhaps says a huge amount about the times we’re in, that the governor disagreed with a law, but let it pass through anyway. In his statement, he said: “I want to be clear that my views on this issue have not changed. And I understand there are those who share my views who will be disappointed in my decision not to veto this legislation. I came to this decision because I believe we’ve spent far too much time focused on this issue, when Delawareans face more serious and pressing concerns every day. It’s time to move on.” He went on, “I remain concerned about the consequences of a recreational marijuana industry in our state. I’m concerned especially about the potential effects on Delaware’s children, on the safety of our roadways, and on our poorest neighborhoods, where I believe a legal marijuana industry will have a disproportionately negative impact. Those concerns are why I could not put my signature to either House Bill 1 or House Bill 2.” What does the Delaware recreational legalization allow for?Every legalization measure is different, and they all come with their own specifics for legal allowance, regulatory measures, and instituted taxes. Here’s a look at what is now allowed in Delaware via its recreational legalization last month. The adults of Delaware (21 and up) can now posses up to an ounce of flower, or 12 grams of concentrate. They can also possess packaged cannabis products with up to 750mg of THC max. If a person is caught with more than these amounts, or uses cannabis in public, its a crime. The bill does not come with an allowance for personal cultivation. In terms of regulation, the bill requires that officials approve a max of 30 licenses for retail locations in the state, 30 licenses for manufacture, another 60 for production, and five more for testing. It does include provisions for social equity which come with special licenses. Microbusinesses also can receive special licenses. These licenses will not be given out until August 2024 at earliest. Following along with other states which have instituted high taxes on cannabis, this legalization comes with an automatic 15% sales tax. 7% of that goes to the Justice Reinvestment Fund, meant to help areas hit hardest by the war on drugs. The new law doesn’t do anything to ease employer enforcement of cannabis policies, and allows the continued testing for marijuana in zero-tolerance situations. Employers can prohibit employees from using at work, and give punishments if workers are high at work. This is not specific to any particular industry, meaning all workplaces have this ability. Prior to this measure, Delaware did pass a medical legalization in 2011, signed by Governor Jack Markell. It allows adult patients of 18 or above to have up to six ounces of cannabis for medical use. Cleared uses include: cancer, PTSD, Alzheimer’s, seizure disorders, and intractable nausea. In 2015, Markell also signed a decriminalization bill. This made up to an ounce a civil infraction with a $100 fine. The decriminalization became official in December 2015. Under the new law, the same civil infraction applies to possession of amounts greater than the legal limit. Other recent legalizationsDelaware passed its new recreational cannabis law by way of its legislature, but many legalizations come by voter ballot, including the two previous to Delaware. In last fall’s midterm elections, both Missouri and Maryland passed such measures. Whereas Missouri passed its measure with about 53.1% of the vote, Maryland passed with a huge 67.2% of the vote. Three states had ballot measures which did not pass: South Dakota, North Dakota, and Arkansas. Oklahoma was supposed to have a ballot measure, but did not in the end. This was blamed on technical errors unrelated to signature collection or verification. Prior to the elections, another semi-legalization happened in 2022 with Minnesota. Minnesota did not pass a standard measure in its congress, nor did it pass a ballot measure among its people. And its legalization is slightly different. In May of last year, the state passed a hemp reform bill, which included the legal use of hemp-derived THC for food and beverage products. As per the law, products can have up to 5mg of THC in a serving, and 50mg per package; all relevant to adults 21 and above. With Delaware included, 22 states are legal for recreational use: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Added onto this are Washington DC, and the territories: the Mariana Islands, and Guam. Then, of course, Minnesota, with its partial legalization. And one other state that did actually vote in a measure – South Dakota. That legalization was repealed by the state’s governor, and a subsequent ballot measure last year turned up a lesser result for legalization, which did not pass. This begs the question of whether there was further corruption on that front, as the initial ballot did pass. We don’t have an answer for that. What this does mean, is that technically 23 states have passed legalization measures, even if one was taken away. ConclusionDelaware and its recreational legalization, are a great example of how things can change, even when politicians aren’t actually for it. Despite the governor repeatedly causing problems on the marijuana front previously, the general turning of tides dictated that he’d have to let the legalization pass, even without agreeing. Let’s all get stoned together! The post Delaware, the Latest State to go Recreational appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/13/delaware-the-latest-state-to-go-recreational/ It was a big story last year when the state of California finally changed it cannabis tax structure so as to help its ailing weed market. But was enough done? Or even the right things? Now, many months after this tax restructuring, the California cannabis market looks like it might well tank out. How did California restructure its weed marketCalifornia has been weed legal since 2016, and with a regulated market since 2018. Since that time, dispensaries and other cannabis services have sprouted up all over the state. Some legal, and some a part of the black market. While the regular market grew, the black market – which existed before anything was legalized – grew along with it. When overproduction came into play in a major way in 2022, California ran into big problems. There was so much product floating around that producers had to lower their costs in order to get rid of their stuff, and this meant an inability to profit. However, lower prices by growers didn’t stop the high price of regulatory measures, or taxes; which have been a part of the industry since the beginning. When California finally went to do something about it, it wasn’t a simple lowering of numbers. Or at least, not enough. Logically, lower taxes and regulatory costs is the answer, but it seems California didn’t want to let go of the majority of the taxes on its weed market, and made changes like these:
The only useful part of this, relates to taxes. Sure, its great to allow for unionization easier, but that’s not where the problem lies. And when it comes to the idea of cracking down on the black market, there’s a disconnect. The black market existed the whole time, as it was there before the legal market. The entire idea of the legal market from the beginning, was to divert from the black market. So making a proclamation now about trying harder sounds like someone didn’t get it from the beginning. The part that helps is the abolishing of the cultivation tax. According to the previous law, cultivators in the state were paying a flat rate of $10.08 per ounce of dried weed. Now consider the issue of overproduction, and that tax amount becomes horribly absurd. Seemingly a showing of just how much the government is trying to milk this industry for every cent possible. California AFTER tax-restructuring for weed industryThe biggest reality to California’s problem, is that it started many years ago. Even back six years ago there was talk that the state was growing over eight times the amount that residents use, and that was before the legal recreational market began. Which means this problem has been around for the entirety of the cannabis industry in California…and it took all the way until 2022 to account for it. Though it was an issue from the beginning, it wasn’t until late 2021– early 2022 that the stories really started coming out about prices dropping extensively for growers. But just because the price for cultivators dropped, it didn’t change the price tag for consumers, or not substantially enough to compete with the black market. The ever-existent black market, which can drop its prices to match a situation much faster, was able to use this to pull back clientele from the legal market. And so in June of 2022, the new laws were instituted for the weed market in California. No more cultivation tax, but the still present – and high – excise tax. These moves were expected to save the California cannabis industry. Now, nearly a year later, how is it all going? According to information released by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, California brought in $5.3 billion in legal cannabis sales for 2022. In 2021 it was $5.77 billion. This marks the first time the industry has fallen, since its inception in 2018. 2022’s number is an 8.2% decrease from 2021. Which means even after the implementation of these new laws, the market’s trajectory didn’t change. To give an idea of just how big California’s market is in general, consider that even with this decrease, the state represents about 20% of the overall industry, according to Forbes Magazine. But perhaps looking at it this way undermines the issues at hand. It’s well understood by those within the industry that high taxes, and extreme regulation, are bringing the market down. As per the same Forbes article, small-time operator Johnny Casali, of Huckleberry Hill Farms, said this: “Most of us farmers have been trying to tell the state [regulators] that the marketplace is imploding. The drop in retail sales means the customer is tired of paying the exorbitant taxes and are now buying it from a friend of a friend or the guy on the corner.” As an example, Huckleberry Hill Farms did sell all its product for 2022, but did so incurring a $50,000 loss for the year. And it’s not like Casali set up a business model wherein the company would sell everything to end up at a loss. The only real reason for this discrepancy is in the falling price of weed per pound. As of the writing of the Forbes article on February 28th, the price of an ounce slipped to $665, a 26% year-over-year decrease. Said Casali of the upcoming season, “We are already getting orders for this season. But without federal legalization, I don’t know how we fix our supply-and-demand problem.” Perhaps this is in part because its not just about too much weed, but not enough legal dispensaries. Though California has upwards of 40 million residents, there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 legal dispensaries. If you spend time in the state and think this doesn’t sound right, consider that many around are black market dispensaries. One of the other issues right now is in reference to federal legalization, or rather, the current lack of it. A producer in one state cannot legally export cannabis to another state. It is, however, being done on the down-low by producers who just want to break even. For everyone playing by the rules, this inability has negative effects on business expansion. California’s new answer?California hasn’t been doing this well. It started out by setting impossibly high taxes and expensive regulatory measures, even as it was already seen that overproduction was a thing. Then when it became so much of a thing that legal businesses started tanking out, it introduced legislation that, more than anything, shows a desire to not really change at all. And now, as the problem continues out of hand, California’s next move is just as facepalm-worthy. It wants to focus on corruption. Focusing on corruption is something that government’s like to do, but they like to do so without being clear about why its happening. Maybe a certain amount of corruption always exists, but when legal operators of any industry are having a hard time, you can expect shadier moves. In this case, it’s a non-working structure set up by the government, which leaves legal operators at a loss. So is it shocking that even those not in the black market, are employing black market tricks? Things like buying a license under the table, or illegally paying regulators, or even threatening violence are all things that should be expected when legal means can’t prevail. But instead of loosening regulation in a more useful way, and getting rid of taxes in a more useful way, the government, instead, is attempting to focus on the issue of corruption, as if the issue isn’t related to its own ridiculous laws. According to a March issue of the Los Angeles Times, “state officials are launching an audit aimed at curtailing bribery, conflicts of interest and other misdeeds.” Not instituting workable and realistic regulation, but instead looking to go after those who have stepped out of line due to the non-working regulation in place. What will this entail? “State auditors plan to identify six jurisdictions with licensed cannabis businesses and review criteria used to approve the permits, reviewing local governments that have been rocked by corruption allegations and others that appear to have fewer such problems.” This includes looking for licensing rules that are more likely to incite fraud and abuse, and going over samples of permits to ensure that the authorities in question did everything by the book. This is all according to Grant Parks, the state auditor. As per Parks, this could be the basis for new laws and regulations. And while that sentiment is good in theory, it feels more like California has plenty of information telling it to update these things more realistically, already. The article goes on to push this point, “The state’s dual state and local licensing system is widely blamed for creating a fertile ground for corruption. The Times investigation uncovered a possible six-figure bribe demand by a former councilman in Baldwin Park — later corroborated by a federal plea agreement — and other potential conflicts of interest around the state.” But again, this focuses more on the fallout of impossible regulation, than simply creating effective regulation to begin with. And it blames the problem on those who bent the rules, rather than the creation of an impossible system. With this thinking…can we really expect anything better to come? ConclusionIf you take a step back, it appears like California is purposefully tanking out its own weed market; though its certainly hard to see a logic there. In the end, its likely just heaps and heaps of greed we’re looking at. So much, so that even with the problems being screamed by all sides, no real change is happening; just baseless measures. The post After Tax Restructuring, California Weed Market Still Going Down appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/12/after-tax-restructuring-california-weed-market-still-going-down/ Like most big brands, cannabis company Tilray has had a difficult time. At least on the weed front. But unlike other brands, it’s not only invested in the weed industry; its also invested in the alcohol industry. In fact, Tilray Beer Brands, its division of craft beers, just reached #9 in sales volume for small and independent brewers. Here’s a bit about how the cannabis giant burns the candle at both ends. Meet Tilray, the cannabis companyTilray is currently one of the giants of the cannabis industry. It’s often considered a Canadian company, and does have large operations out of Canada. In reality though, the brand itself was formed in the US in 2014, and is based out of New York. Regardless of specifics, its Canadian arm is extensive, and after its 2020 merger with fellow Canadian company Aphria, it became the biggest cannabis company in Canada. Tilray Canada was one of the first licensed producers in the country; it was also the first company to perform medical trials which were approved by Health Canada. It was the first company to export medical cannabis out of Canada, and into the US. Tilray was the first company to enter a US stock exchange, which it did in 2018 when it joined Nasdaq. It’s original share price was $17, and peaked in 2018 at $214. This wasn’t long-lasting, however, and it came back down the next year to $29. Since then, it’s been sliding down in value over the years. Unfortunately, one of the more consistent stories of late, is the massive issues in the current cannabis industry. Tilray is no exception here, and the cannabis empire it built, is now on shakier and shakier ground. This was made clear in different ways. For one, in early 2023, Tilray announced it would cut a quarter of its staff in its medical cannabis production facility in Cantanhede, Portugal. This accounted for 49 jobs. And this makes sense. Tilray has had some big losses. Tilray reported a $61.6 million net loss for the quarter which ended on November 30th, 2022. It’s stock price has seen a consistent lowering in the past few years, with a price of $2.73 on May, 9th, 2023. This is a long way from the days of $214 a share, or even $17. This trend is not unique to Tilray, and is currently a recent standard of the legal cannabis market. Tilray trades on Nasdaq under TLRY, and comes in fourth as of May 9th on the companiesmarketcap list of top cannabis companies according to market capital. It’s Canada’s highest entrant on the list, behind Curaleaf, Innovative Industrial, and Green Thumb Industries, respectfully. Despite the hard times its having, the company announced in April that it plans to acquire fellow Canadian cannabis company Hexo Corp., to help keep its place on top. The acquisition is for $56 million. Hexo is seeing its own decline over the years, so we’ll have to watch to see what transpires from this deal, in this current weed economy. Tilray craft beerPerhaps it bodes well for Tilray that it has its hand in more than one pot. What is this other pot? Well, not pot…but beer. Over the past few years, along with cannabis, Tilray has been building a craft beer name for itself. This started before its merger with Aphria. It was reported in 2018 that Tilray’s Canada branch and Anhuiser-Bush, the maker of Budweiser, were going into business together. The idea was for both companies to invest around $50 million, to create a new brand called Fluent Beverage Co. It didn’t go well, and in early 2022 it was reported that the partnership ended. This, however, was only the beginning for Tilray and beer. During the time it was brokering the deal with Aphria, and with Aphria’s help, Tilray bought SweetWater Brewing Co. for $300 million in 2020. It was, in fact, Aphria’s deal in the first place. A year later, it was reported that Tilray spent $102.9 million to buy Breckenridge Distillery based out of Colorado. At the time, Tilray CEO Irwin Simon had this to say about it: “We see tremendous potential for Breckenridge and our existing SweetWater brand to complement each other, expanding their respective reach and driving further profitable growth in our beverage alcohol segment.” Not much more than a week later, Tilray was at it again. It acquired two more craft beer brands out of California: Green Flash Brewing Co., and Beer Co., for $5.1 million in cash and stocks. Of this deal, Simon stated: “Right before year-end, SweetWater announced the acquisition of Alpine Beer and Green Flash, iconic West Coast craft beer brands to be brewed in our new Fort Collins facility for West Coast distribution, all which complements SweetWater’s existing product offerings and give us a strong foothold in California and the west part of the United States, the largest state economy in the U.S. and the largest legal cannabis market in the world.” About a year later, Tilray made another purchase, this time acquiring New York-based Montauk Brewing Company. Said Simon of this acquisition, “Montauk Brewing is an iconic brand with leading market share and distribution in the northeast. Tilray Brands intends to leverage SweetWater’s existing nationwide infrastructure and Montauk Brewing’s northeast influence to significantly expand our distribution network and drive profitable growth in our beverage-alcohol segment.” Latest Tilray beer newsIn just a few years, Tilray has moved up the ranks in the craft beer world. This year the Brewer’s Association (BA), a not-for-profit association meant to promote independent American craft brewers, reported Tilray and its beer brands as 9th out of the top 50 craft brewing companies. This according to its Annual Craft Brewing Industry Production Report for 2022. The report was released on April 18th, and goes over different production statistics for the craft brewing industry of the US for the year. According to the report, the craft brew industry (made up of small and independent breweries) produced a total of 24.3 million barrels for the year. These numbers were close to 2021 numbers, with a small rise in overall market share from 13.1% in 2021, to 13.2% in 2022. Jobs went up 9% last year for craft brewers, accounting for 189,413 jobs. Despite this, the entire beer market was estimated to have shrunk by about 3% by volume in 2022. Bart Watson, the Brewer’s Association chief economist, put it this way, “2022 presented small brewers with a number of challenges, including rising operating and material costs and increasing competition, particularly in distribution. In this maturing and competitive market, collective growth for the category is hard to come by.” As a part of the annual report, the BA released the top 50 craft brew companies, measured by beer sales in volume. Tilray and its craft beer brands came in at number nine on the list. The top five on the list, are D. G. Yuengling and Son Inc, Boston Beer Co, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, Duvel Moortgat USA, and Gambrinus Company. When looking at the biggest beer brands in general by sales volume, the top five are: Anheuser-Busch Inc, MolsonCoors, Constellation, Heineken USA, and Pabst Brewing Co. Interestingly, Tilray Beer Brands gets the 18th spot on the list. So not only is it a top craft producer, it’s a pretty big producer in general. As a note, Tilray’s part in both industries are separate. While the idea originally was to make cannabis-infused beer products, that market never took off, leaving Tilray’s beer production as a separate entity. And considering the woes of the cannabis industry, it might end up being Tilray’s ticket out. ConclusionTilray certainly did well in the cannabis industry for a time, and is still making big moves. Right now its technically at the top of the heap, but what that means is questionable. In the future, it could possibly regain its footing depending on other factors, but that’s a bigger issue regarding the industry altogether. Regardless, Tilray has a nice foothold in the craft beer market, not only ranking high among small and independent brewers, but in the entire beer industry. So if Tilray’s legal cannabis companies tank out in the end, it still has beer to fall back on. Welcome all. The post Tilray Brands, And the Balance Between Cannabis and Beer appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/12/tilray-brands-and-the-balance-between-cannabis-and-beer/ In a way it’s a strange concept, and one we might not think about consciously, all of the time. But in nearly every government system, there’s some kind of thought that we’re taught, that it’s bad to feel good. While this idea is unfortunately tied to many parts of life, it can be seen very prominently when dealing with drug policy. *This article is the opinion of the writer, and has no bearing on the views held by the rest of the publication. We’re taught it’s bad to feel goodI wish this was something I was making up, but it’s most certainly not. And it’s also not the exact same attitude in every country, although there is a suspicious similarity in a lot of drug law. In fact, if you take a look around globally, you’d think every non-government approved substance is the cause of major death. It’s almost hard to believe that no death toll drugs like cannabis are the concentration of such extreme laws, given that such drugs aren’t known to hurt people. Think about it… We’re told what we can take, and what we can’t; with nearly anything that produces a high getting eliminated. Alcohol is actually one of the sole exceptions, and its not like there haven’t been initiatives to get rid of it before in America, (while it is illegal in some parts of the world). For America, it just wasn’t a feasible move. We are, however, told that drugs like opioids are technically okay. And even as governments outwardly lament their damage, they also keep them legal, which subconsciously tells us a different story. One that allows things that feel good so long as a government profits. Thanks for stopping over! We offer the Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter for email updates; and a range of cool offers on cannabis flowers, vapes and smoking equipment, edibles, cannabinoids (like delta-8), amanita mushroom extracts, and shelves of stuff more. We think its good to feel good, and want to help you do it! Want a similar comparison? Think of money. We’re also told how we can and can’t spend money. Money is our source of independence. It’s what allows us to make decisions about lifestyle, family matters, hobbies, and everything else. That a government would or should have the right to tax people, and then tell them how to use the rest of their money, is kind of insane. Gambling is a great example of governments wanting to control how you spend. This isn’t about a deadly substance, or fear for people. Governments don’t have a problem taking money from struggling people, and we know this, so we know its not for our protection either. Did we learn it from the puritans?First and foremost, before getting into this, puritanism only relates to a certain part of history in a certain part of the world. This idea is not meant to offer a direct answer to this overarching idea, but it can shed light on how these belief structures get into place, and continue on. It’s good to remember that when it comes to American history, it was built on puritanical beliefs. The word ‘puritan’ doesn’t relate to a specific denomination of Christianity outside of ‘Protestantism.’ The Puritans were a group of English Protestants from the 16th and 17th centuries. The group had the goal of purifying the Church of England from anything related to Roman Catholicism. Overall, the group wanted to run a tighter ship. They wanted things to be more strict, even to the point of some wanting to separate from the church entirely. They became a strong political power during the 1600’s by connecting with other similarly-minded religious groups of the time. In the end, though, Puritans lost out. When the 1662 Act of Uniformity went through in England, and the English church was restored to previous standards, Puritans were essentially invalidated. At that time, many of these puritans were called ‘dissenters’ for going against the 1662 changes, and many left the church at that time. Their presence began to serve as general agitation for the English church and government. So where did they go? Many went on to the newly established colonies of the New World, particularly New England. And while this large immigration ended within decades of starting, the end result was around 21,000 puritans in the New England colonies by the middle of the 1600’s. That’s a large percentage of the overall crowd for the time, making it unsurprising that puritan beliefs took over the New World. Consider that by mid-1600, the largest colony – Massachusetts Bay Colony, had about 20,000 people. It was originally settled by 1,000 puritans. Technically, if we’re to be realistic about it, Puritanism isn’t that different from any other form of Christianity, or any other religion. It offers the same basic ideas, and doesn’t wander far from the original doctrines. Part of what came with puritanism, however, was the attitude of it all. They wanted stronger adherence to rules, and a stricter culture. While I could go into some of the tenants of the grouping, they’re less important than the sheer idea of the anxiety that drove the whole thing, and the severe way it was implemented. Is it that weird that the country that grew out of this still holds onto some of these beliefs, even if at the same time its pulled in a different directions? While America is home to much bad behavior and free thought, it also has a base of puritan-like beliefs that often win out, even as opinions change. Its also good to remember that religious beliefs dominate many governments, which make puritan influence on America, a pretty standard thing. Perhaps the puritans are just a great way of showing how the progression of religious thought on other structures of belief, comes into play. Shouldn’t we want to feel good? The reality of life is that we can sit and argue anything. So long as a person can have an opinion, that opinion is valid, as that’s all it is, opinion. You could ask this question to a lot of different people, and get a lot of different answers. Maybe the logic answer is that we should want to feel good, but that idea is often drowned out in favor of other factors like religious belief. Religion is a motivating factor in behaviors like self-flagellation, wherein people actually beat themselves in an act of self-punishment. What stands more for the idea of going against your own personal happiness? Much religious belief has to do with being chosen in some way, versus being left out. It’s about winning the favor of a god, and making sure to check the boxes that will lead to whatever promise there is of a great eternal life. It can come with huge amounts of anxiety and fear. After all, what happens if you can’t keep your kids in line? Where will they end up? And it seems that for some, there’s an accepted link between self-punishment and/or unhappiness, and this ability to be a good person who gets the right religious benefits. Think of the restrictive lives of some of the people considered most holy, like priests or monks. Even those of us who are religious, generally don’t want to go to such repressive and limiting extremes. Because its hard, and it lacks fun or freedom. Puritan ideas are like an in-between. Not requiring those full commitments, but still applying the same harsh sentiments about life and how it should be lived. People who get behind such ideas are likely more willing to support super harsh penalties, like the death sentence for drugs that don’t actually kill. While logically we should want to feel good, feeling good doesn’t always seem to jive with strict adherence to religious belief. And in a world where 75%+ claim some sort of religious affiliation, it means a world of people who are influenced by these religious values. I make absolutely no judgement on that part, and speak of this as a matter of a group thought process over individual belief or logic. Why are we taught its better to not feel good?I don’t believe we’re taught this directly. I don’t know of any religion that specifically teaches that a person should move away from good things to bad things. Even promoting strict adherence doesn’t usually come with this as a direct statement. It seems to be in trying to think of ourselves as holy or in-line that causes this as a possible belief. It’s also quite possible these sentiments are taken advantage of by governments as a way to keep people in line, regardless of what that line is. As far as why this would be so widely adopted? Hard for me to say, apart from simply the fear of non-inclusion. The world is a scary place with tons of question marks, and its easier to have answers. People seem to gravitate to something that gives answers, and then do what they have to, to keep in line. And certainly not without irony. Think of a mob boss getting done killing people, just to get to church on time, and sit in a confessional booth. How many people consider themselves good patrons of their religion, while also breaking tenants of the religion, like cheating on a spouse, or robbing another person in some way. A contradiction we seem pretty used to in life. No, I don’t believe we’re directly taught that its bad to feel good. But we are subconsciously taught it. And it reverberates in so many parts of life, like how we’re taught to view drugs. And while it’s probably best not to have your population addicted to awful substances, it gets crazy to think of the extremes put into place to keep populations away from drugs like weed and psychedelics. When it comes to such drugs, and the realities within, why can’t we just accept that it’s okay to feel good? ConclusionI’m not blaming anything on any specific group, or fingering any thought process or related religion, for this. But there does seem to be a general thinking that it’s not good to feel good, and I think this is something that we should be ready to finally do away with. Let’s all feel good from here on out! And let’s feel okay about using substances that help us do it, so long as no one is getting hurt. Hey all. The post Why Are We Taught That It’s Bad to Feel Good? appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/12/why-are-we-taught-that-its-bad-to-feel-good/ Maryland was one of two states that passed a cannabis legalization measure in last November’s elections; and its not wasting time getting things started. Whereas some states take years to get measures approved, this state is doing it in less than one. With legislation recently signed, Maryland is set to open its adult-use market July 1st. The Maryland ballot measureOut of five states with cannabis legalization ballot measures last fall, two managed to get their measures voted-in by the people. Maryland and Missouri were the winners; while Arkansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota voters decided to remain weed-illegal. Originally six states were supposed to have ballot measures, but Oklahoma did not get its measure approved in time, due to technical system issues, and not because the work to get it on, wasn’t completed. Maryland used Question 4 for its adult-use ballot measure: the Marijuana Legalization Amendment. According to the measure, if voted in, the adult-use market would open less than a year later, in the summer of 2023. The amendment directs the Maryland State Legislature to create and pass regulatory laws to govern things like possession and use, distribution, and taxes. The vote was successful for Maryland. In fact, the margins were pretty wide. A final tally found 67.20% of the voting population voted yes to legal cannabis, accounting for 1,302,161 of the votes. Only 32.8% were not on-board with this, which accounted for 635,572 votes. To give an idea, the other state to pass its voter ballot, Missouri, had a much closer to 50/50 breakdown in votes. Thanks for joining! We’ve got the Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter to keep you informed; which comes with a wide selection of promos for weed flowers, vapes and smoking devices, edibles, cannabinoids (like delta-8), amanita mushroom products, and way, way more. Feeling good is great; come do it! Before the vote took place, Maryland approved a medical program in 2013. A year later it instituted a decriminalization policy, which allows users to possess up to 10 grams for personal use; something that was a misdemeanor with a $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail, previously attached. Back in 2010, Maryland wasn’t terribly weed-friendly at all, and had the 5th highest state arrest rate for cannabis possession. Whereas the national rate of cannabis arrests at that time was 256 per 100,000 people, in Maryland it was 409 per 100,000. The state has come a long way. Maryland passed laws for adult-use marketIn order to fulfill the ballot-measure’s promise of a summer start date, Maryland’s congress worked hard to get a bill passed. And it did. In fact, it passed two bills in April. In the end, the House and Senate worked out discrepancies with two bills, not one, and sent formal revised copies of both to the governor on April 7th. Part of the reason for the rush, is that the voter measure for legalization goes into effect July 1st, and the government wants laws in place when this happens. Considering that both sides of Congress have their own versions; it says a lot about simply wanting to get something done, that the situation didn’t lead to endless fighting and stalemating. Issues like taxation and regulation, where there were differences of opinion between the House and Senate, were pretty quickly worked out. The two bills that got sent to the governor’s desk, are SB 516 and HB 556. It’s not that the government had a die-hard desire to get this done quickly. But the legislation was considered ‘emergency,’ as the state wants something in place when the legalization begins. For such a situation, approval only requires 3/5 of congressmen to vote positively in both chambers. This is because regardless of what is or isn’t worked out by the government, as of July 1st, it becomes legal for adult residents to possess up to 1.5 ounces of weed. The ballot measure was carefully written to force this on the government, rather than letting the government have leeway to take its time. Governor Wes Moore signed off on the bills on Wednesday, May 3rd. Said Moore of the laws upon signing, they will “ensure that the rollout of recreational cannabis in our state drives opportunity in an equitable way.” And that “The criminalization of marijuana harmed low income communities and communities of color in a profound way. We want to make sure that the legalization of marijuana lifts those communities now in a profound way.” What will the Maryland adult-use market look like?Between the two laws, here are the main bullet points for the upcoming Maryland adult-use market. Taxes
Regulation
Social equity
Dispensaries
The evolution of cannabis lawsOne of the things that the Maryland new adult-use policy (and the process to get laws approved) shows, is the progress of the cannabis industry. I write a lot about failings of the cannabis industry when it comes to taxes, regulation, the implementation of social equity programs, and the lack of one system learning from another. Maryland shows it doesn’t have to be this way. Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see what happens. But there are a few provisions that insinuate the state is trying to do better than other states; many of which are having huge issues with lowered sales right now, amid an industry rife with layoffs and closures. For one thing, if 9% is the full tax rate, that’s way lower than other states, some of which instituted policies with upwards of 30% in taxes, much from sin taxes. Is this low enough to compete with the black market? Maybe… California had to finally lower tax rates last year, but its still having problems. The state also went further with social equity. Whereas it was stuck in like an afterthought for many states, with no answer as to how someone coming from low means would be able to realistically access such programs; Maryland does more (at least on paper) to ensure these populations actually have a shot at entering the market in some way. Again, how useful these measures really are, remains to be seen. It also remains to be seen if the regulatory structure and cost is permitting of smaller companies, or, if like in other states, it will be a big-company dominated market. Considering the goal of the government is to bring in taxes, and that it isn’t specifically about promoting small businesses, Maryland might be the next state to promulgate a corporate cannabis industry…and not much else. Of course, such measures also make it difficult to compete with the black market, so once again, it remains to be seen how this goes in the end. ConclusionThe most impressive part of Maryland and its adult-use market (to me), is the intelligence behind the original ballot measure; which didn’t allow for government infighting to prevent the measure from taking place when it was supposed to. Perhaps even more than seeing states update policy techniques, its interesting to watch how the people introducing and promoting these measures, write them out to be more effective. Welcome readers. The post Maryland About to Open Adult-Use Market appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2023/05/11/maryland-about-to-open-adult-use-market/ High-potency CBD is arguably the best choice for heavy consumers. Still, these products have benefits that all health enthusiasts can enjoy. When CBD started gaining traction in the 2010s, it was a shell of what we have today regarding quality and concentration. But vendors offer high-potency CBD with unprecedented purity and efficacy thanks to new innovations, techniques, and technologies. We also can’t forget how shockingly inexpensive some of these products are. However, the cost isn’t the only benefit of high-potency CBD. So are strong CBD products right for you? Let’s see which advantages catch your eye. What is High-Potency CBD?No set number separates “regular” potency from high-potency CBD. Logically, we assume that a certain number of milligrams “counts” as high potency. For instance, some might see 2000mg as the cutoff, while others could claim it’s lower or higher. However, defining a strong CBD product isn’t about the total CBD content. Instead, focus on the compound’s concentration. For example, some vendors sell oils containing as much as 6,000mg per bottle. However – intentionally or not – this number is deceptive. These products typically come in larger containers, diluting the potency. To truly understand if your cannabidiol is high-potency, you must look at the CBD per milliliter. Calculating CBD PotencyA bit of simple math is all you need to determine how potent a CBD product is. For example, if an oil contains 6,000mg of cannabidiol in a 120 mL bottle, the concentration per milliliter is 6,000 divided by 120. According to our calculations, the product contains 50 mg/ml (50mg of CBD per 1 mL). Meanwhile, a smaller (and cheaper) 30 ml bottle at 3,000mg CBD oil equals 100 mg/ml. Essentially, the “high-CBD” 6,000 mg option charges customers for a carrier oil, not CBD. In short, a genuine “high potency CBD” product contains a significant amount of CBD with each serving. However, the definition of “significant” depends on your personal dosage needs. Benefits of High Potency CBDThe therapeutic benefits of high-potency CBD need little introduction. But there are many excellent reasons – health being just one – to try strong CBD products. 1. ValueJust like we value a healthy lifestyle, it’s also helpful to maintain a healthy wallet – especially with the rising living costs. Even if you don’t rely on a strong dose, high-potency CBD is a highly effective way to save money. The “bang for your buck” varies depending on your vendor. For now, we’ll use this line of CBD oils as an example. The mid-range products come in 750mg and 1500mg options at $59,99 and 109.99. Although these choices are good enough for average to slightly advanced CBD users, a 3,000mg option exists for $199.99. This price point may seem intimidating, but the savings speak for themselves. When you divide the price by milligrams into the 750, 1500, and 3000 options, you pay $0.08, $0.073, and $0.066/mg, respectively. High-potency CBD may occasionally hit your wallet, but the long-term savings will accumulate quickly. It won’t be long before these products pay for themselves. 2. Concentrated CBD Goes FartherSpeaking of savings, high-potency CBD offers greater longevity. Using a product with a high maximum strength means you use less oil in each serving. For example, if your daily CBD consumption is 25mg from a 750mg product, this amounts to one milliliter per dosage. A 30 ml bottle will therefore last one month. However, the 3,000mg option contains 100 mg/ml, meaning you can get the same strength with only 0.25 ml – four times longer. This stretches your product’s longevity from 30 days to 120. Again, the 3,000mg oil costs $199.99, paid every four months. However, the 750mg product costs $59.99 monthly, almost $240.00 in the same 120-day timespan. The numbers don’t lie. High-potency CBD stretches your dollar and makes dosing more efficient. 3. Improved PurityThe process of making a highly concentrated product leaves no room for fillers – a practice known in various industries as “dilution.” Dilution is used to remain compliant with the federal 0.3% THC threshold. If a crude oil product exceeds the legal THC limit, manufacturers dilute it to lower the percentage by volume. Consequently, however, CBD also gets diluted. This is why conventionally-produced oils won’t reach the concentration of their high-potency counterparts. To create high-potency CBD, vendors have to use pure extract. Unfortunately, there’s a tradeoff. These oils will have more THC than regular products, so dose carefully. 4. High-Potency CBD is More Bioavailable (Sort Of)Regardless of potency, oral CBD is the least bioavailable option. Bioavailability refers to how much of the compound is left to be used by your body after – in CBD’s case – being processed by the liver. Ultimately, CBD is CBD. The molecular composition and structure of cannabidiol don’t change, maintaining an average bioavailability of around 20%. Taking more CBD won’t improve that number, but it can compensate for some CBD lost during metabolism and digestion. But on the flip side, an excess serving of CBD is as ineffective as consuming too little. Start with a very low dose and gradually increase over several days (or weeks, if needed) until you notice results. 5. High-Potency CBD Opens New Therapeutic PossibilitiesWhile we don’t recommend a high CBD dose when addressing mild to moderate symptoms or for general wellness. But more severe issues require hundreds of milligrams. For instance, children with severe epilepsy – the only use proven by human clinical trials – take hundreds of milligrams. Regardless of the reason, heavy CBD users can now access their needed potency without consuming massive amounts of oil or other products. 6. Strong Doses of CBD May Help Prevent Opioid RelapseFor instance, researchers in a rare double-blind placebo-controlled study examined CBD’s potential use to combat heroin relapses in past users. The 2019 paper, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, split the participants into three groups. One received an 800 mg dose of CBD after being exposed to drug-seeking cues. The second and third groups were given 400 mg or placebo with the same instructions. Then, the individuals were subjected to craving-inducing triggers. Interestingly, CBD helped reduce the desire to consume heroin. It also reduced physiological responses to drug cues, like rapid heartbeat, and increased salivation. The placebo group, meanwhile, didn’t show the same results. Perhaps even more compelling is that the beneficial anti-craving effects lasted several days after the participants stopped consuming high-potency CBD. Given the nature of the opioid crisis, having a natural remedy like CBD commercially available could – with more research – usher in groundbreaking addiction treatment. 7. High-Potency CBD is Packed With Terpenes and Other CannabinoidsThere’s no excuse for low-quality cannabidiol extracts. But given the specialization and advanced equipment needed, high-potency CBD manufacturers shouldn’t create disappointing products. High-Potency CBD needs to be full-spectrum for maximum CBD retention. Although the concentration leaves behind higher amounts of THC per serving, the potent combination of cannabinoids and terpenes offers unbeatable therapeutic effects. Are High-Potency CBD Products Better?High-potency CBD products require a level of specialization and equipment conventional CBD manufacturers don’t offer. With such standards, it’s safe to assume that companies selling concentrated CBD put more time and care into their inventory. Unfortunately, it’s not a perfect world. Printing a fake label or false lab report takes less skill (and money) than making genuine products. Fortunately, this practice is rare, but it’s crucial to research a company first. Is High-Potency CBD Right for Me?Considering its wide applications for all health and wellness levels, high-potency CBD isn’t only a niche product for heavy consumers. When making your decision, consider the following questions:
You don’t have to answer “yes” to all of those questions. But if enough resonates with you, high-potency CBD might be worth a try. ConclusionHigh-potency CBD isn’t just noteworthy for its cannabinoid strength. If you need high concentrations of CBD, these products are perfect for you. But the average CBD user can also enjoy other benefits, such as long-term savings and less frequent orders. However, THC may be a concern for some people. While high-potency CBD adheres to the federal 0.3% THC limit, higher extract concentrations leave behind more milligrams per serving. Consequently, some products could contain enough THC per milliliter to trigger intoxication or appear on a drug test. Unfortunately, CBD (and cannabinoid medicine as a whole) isn’t well-understood. With that in mind, always consult a health professional before trying CBD.
