Digestive issues are amongst the most common disorders in the world, which is why researchers are always keen to discover new therapies to treat gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. The discovery of endocannabinoid system receptors in the GI tract has led researchers to examine links between cannabis and the gut, to ascertain if cannabinoid compounds can be used to rebalance an unhealthy microbiome. In fact, there are more bacterial cells in the body than human cells, about 40 trillion bacteria to 30 trillion human cells, meaning the body is made up mostly of these microbial organisms, known collectively as the microbiome. When referring to the microbes in a specific area of the body, they’re known as microbiota. The microbes in the GI tract are referred to as gut microbiome, and are mostly found in a pocket of the large intestines, known as the cecum. Though there are many types of microbes, bacteria are the most studied. There are more than 1,000 types of bacterial microbes in the gut microbiome, and each plays a vital role in maintaining overall health. In the past, it was thought that the gut was only responsible for digesting food, but now it’s known the interaction between the gut microbiome and brain plays such an important role in overall wellbeing, the stomach has been dubbed, the “second brain.” As food is digested, enzymes are created, firing neurotransmitters that influence everything from weight, blood flow, bone growth and heart health to immunity, libido, sleep and mood. Poor gut health can cause an array of problems, leading to obesity, heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. In addition, the gut influences brain function through the Vagus Nerve, sending a constant stream of messages in the form of neurotransmitters, signaling the brain to release hormones that regulate body and mental health. Other outcomes of poor gut health include anxiety and depression. What is the Endocannabinoid System? The endocannabinoid system (ECS) was discovered by the Israeli chemist Raphael Mechoulam in the early 1990s, as part of his research into cannabis compounds. In 1992, Mechoulam’s lab isolated the first endocannabinoid, a molecule now classified as a CB1 receptor partial agonist, and named anandamide. Soon after, another endocannabinoid was discovered, 2-arachidonoylglycerol, or 2-AG. In fact, there are hundreds of endocannabinoids active throughout the body, but these two are the most studied. Endocannabinoids are types of molecule produced by the body that act on receptors to keep all systems working optimally.Endocannabinoids behave differently from other neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are stored in vesicles and released when activated by a presynaptic neuron, acting postsynaptically. By contrast, endocannabinoids are produced on demand, where and when needed. They are released by postsynaptic neuron and act presynaptically. They bind to receptors to activate signaling. ![]() There are two main forms of receptors: CB1 receptors, found mostly in the central nervous system (CNS) and CB2 receptors, found in immune cells. CB1 is one of the most abundant G-protein-coupled receptors in the CNS. CB1 receptors are present in the neocortex, hippocampus, basal ganglia, cerebellum and brainstem. As well as immune cells, CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system, and are associated with inflammation, addiction and synaptic plasticity. Endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor. The effect depends on where the receptor is located and which endocannabinoid binds to it. Links between ECS and the MicrobiomeMuch research needs to be done to understand the full scope of the ECS, but one of its functions appears to be a modulator between the digestive, nervous, and immune systems. In the same way that the gut microbiome works to maintain overall wellbeing, or homeostasis (a state of balance between the body’s organs), so too does the ECS. Research links the ECS to the following functions: appetite, digestion, metabolism, inflammation, chronic pain, mood, learning, memory, motor control, sleep, heart health, liver function, stress and reproductive health. As the gut microbiota also plays a key role in these functions, it easy to see how an imbalance in one system can have knock-on effects to the other systems. For example, endocannabinoids might target CB1 receptors in the spinal nerve to relieve pain. Others might bind to CB2 receptors in immune cells to signal the body is experiencing inflammation, a common sign of autoimmune disorders. CB1 receptors have a direct action on the gut, and have been shown to modulate intestinal motility. More than that, a growing body of evidence now confirms the presence of a “gut-endocannabinoid axis,” which determines the integrity of the gut barrier by influencing both gut barrier function and intestinal permeability. Research has shown that increases or decreases in certain endocannabinoids affect the number of good probiotic bacteria in the gut. Because cannabis is a phytocannabinoid that acts on the ECS, it has the capacity to bridge the ECS and gut microbiota. Can Cannabis Balance the Microbiome? In vitro assays (cell research in glass) have shown that cannabis has antimicrobial properties. The human gut contains 4 main phyla: Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria, of which Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes are linked to obesity and colorectal cancer. A high Firmicutes: Bacteroidetes ratio is typical with obesity, and new research shows a balanced ratio can be restored in mice using the psychoactive cannabis compound, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC.) In obese mice, the gut microbiota modifies endocannabinoid signaling, resulting in increased gut permeability, inflammation and fat storage. ![]() THC has been shown to block this effect by increasing the presence of bacteria called Akkermansia mucinphila, which control fat storage and metabolism to facilitate weight loss. This bacterium can also strengthen signaling between the gut and the brain, and strengthen the gut barrier. It also linked to improved glucose tolerance and glucose metabolism. Research on long-term users of cannabis has shown that users display Prevotella: Bacteroides ratio 13-fold lower than non-users. Though further research is required to assess the full implications of this finding, what is clear is that cannabis use leads to alterations in gut microbiome, which due to the interconnectivity of the ECS, affects other physiological systems, including brain function. It’s also clear that there are links between the gut microbiome and both gastrointestinal and neurodegenerative disorders. The ability of THC to change the gut microbiome, by increasing the number of healthy bacteria that protect against obesity and associated conditions, suggest its restorative capacity to balance the microbiome. Finally Thoughts on Cannabis and the MicrobiomeA 2016 article that reviewed over 10 years of research suggests the theory that endocannabinoid deficiency could be the source of autoimmune disorders including fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as migraine. However, because the full scope of the ECS is not understood, medical applications are still evolving. The drug rimonabant was developed to aid weight loss by blocking the CB1 receptor. The thinking was that if the ECS controls hunger, a drug that blocked signaling could cause weight loss. The drug worked in this regard but because the ECS is so connected to other functions, rimonabant also caused some nasty side effects on mood. People who took reported feeling suicidal. Rimonabant was removed from the market. However, it’s easy to imagine that with better understanding of the ECS and the workings of endocannabinoids, it will be possible in the future to develop cannabis medications with more direct actions that provide relief by alleviating symptoms of digestive orders and/or rebalance the microbiome. Although still considered a somewhat less common alternative cannabinoid, HHC – or Hexahydrocannabinol – has been gaining popularity over the last year. To the point that it’s currently undergoing a rebrand, so to speak. Some companies have started referring to HHC, as HXC. Learn why the switch to HXC is happening. To stay current on everything important happening in the industry, subscribe to The Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter. Also, it’ll get you premium access to deals on cannabis flowers, vapes, edibles, and much more! We’ve also got standout offers on cannabinoids, like HHC-O, Delta 8, Delta 9 THC, Delta-10 THC, THCO, THCV, THCP & HHC, which won’t kill your bank account. Head over to our “Best-of” lists to get these deals, and remember to enjoy responsibly! What is Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC/HXC)?All abbreviations aside, let’s focus on the basics here: what are hexahydrocannabinols? In short, they are another group of psychoactive cannabinoids that are very similar to tetrahydrocannabinols. HHC is basically a simplified version of Delta 9 THC. Both HHC and THC have very similar molecular structures and comparable effects. With HHC, all the double bonds have been broken and replaced with hydrogen (AKA hydrogenation). It was discovered during research in the 1960s and 70s in which the goal was to find the most basic cannabinoid-like substances that could still bind to CB receptors. There is a biologically active naturally occurring (−)-hexahydrocannabinol, as well as its synthetic enantiomer (+)-hexahydrocannabinol. The synthetic HHC, which can be found in spice, has the chemical formula: 9-Nor-9β-hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol, and the natural variety, found in trace amounts in cannabis pollen, goes by the formula: 6aR,9R,10aR-Hexahydrocannabinol. In addition to the natural and synthetic HHCs, a couple of more potent analogues and isomers that have been created, as well as new discussion regarding the possibility of more chain lengths and combinations like HHCV, HHCB, HHCH and so on. These are the same chain length variations we see in all the different THCs. Now, keep in mind that these are all synthetic cannabinoids – but in cannabis, the definition of “synthetic” can mean one of two things. First, synthetic cannabinoids are compounds that do not exist in nature and must be created in a lab, like THC-O. Also, a synthetic can be a cannabinoid that does exist in nature, but in such minimal amounts that in order to manufacture enough for it to be used in consumer products, it must still be synthesized in a lab, like Delta 8 THC. HHC-O falls into the first category, while HHC belongs to the second. In cannabis plants, HHC is found in trace amounts in the pollen. Then we have HHC-O, which is the acetate version of HHC, and HHC-P which is the carbon version. We’re seeing a small influx of new, HHC-P products, hitting the store shelves, but it’s close to impossible to find any information about this cannabinoid that comes from a neutral, fact-based party rather than from the companies who are selling it. It’s likely because, the companies selling the compounds are also the ones who are creating them in the first place, and no one else really knows about these compounds or has had the opportunity to study them yet. What’s in a name? HXC vs HHCJust to make It perfectly clear, HXC and HHC are the same thing. Simply put, HHC is undergoing a rebrand, with a few select companies now selling HXC, HXC-O, and HXC- P… instead of HHC, HHC-O, and HHC-P. It’s hard to tell how many companies will begin doing this, but because a couple of the bigger industry brands like Delta Extrax and Cake are doing it, it’s likely to catch on. According to our friends over at Delta Extrax, “As cannabinoids gain popularity, so does the misinformation about them. You can look at this slight change in abbreviation as an upgrade and those who don’t adapt get left behind. Another big reason why the name upgrade occurred is that HXC is the abbreviated word for Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC).” It’s a simply but straightforward reason. I personally cannot think of any other cannabinoids getting a new name or rebranding, as there is usually some scientific basis to their names and acronyms. But it’s possible that we may see more of this in the future, and perhaps this is signaling a time when consumer products start to veer away from their chemical descriptions and start using more marketable names. HHC/HXC and drug testingWhen it comes to cannabis, standard urine tests are used to detect use ranging from roughly 1 to 45 days. Occasional users will typically be clean after 1-5 days, regular light users will take about 1-3 weeks, and for heavy daily users, expect 4 to 6 weeks to get clean. Contrary to popular belief, standard urine tests don’t screen for the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in cannabis, but rather, they detect the metabolites created by the human body when we are exposed to THC. This class of metabolites is known as THC-COOH. These metabolites are inactive, so drug testing only measures exposure, NOT impairment.THC-COOH, or “carboxy THC” is the most common name for this metabolite. It’s the second THC-metabolite formed in our bodies, following hydroxy-THC, immediately after exposure. THC-COOH is lipid-soluble, meaning it’s stored in our fat cells making it detectable in our systems for much longer than other substances, those that are water soluble for example. One of the more interesting and appealing attributes about HHC/HXC, is that it is believed to not show up on a drug test, because it does not trigger the same metabolites in the body as tetrahydrocannabinols. Now, this is where things get a bit sketchy… it’s quite difficult to find products that are pure HHC/HXC. Even when advertised as such, many of these products contain trace amounts of Delta 8, Delta 9, and other THCs, in which case, the user would fail their drug test. To be safe, all cannabis products should be avoided if you have an important drug test coming up. Companies that have switched to HXC – and what consumers are saying about itSo far, I’ve only discovered two major companies and one smaller brand that are selling HHC products as HXC. The two household names are Cake and Delta Extrax, and the lesser known company is Medusa Delta 8 – all of which are selling some HXC vape devices. Examples of some HXC products you can find at Delta Extrax: SFV OG HXC + HXC-P 2 Gram Disposable, Space Candy HXC + HXC-P 2 Gram Cartridge, and Tropical Zkittlez HXC + HXC-P 2 Gram Cartridge. At cake, you can check out HXC disposables in a variety of different strains and flavors including: Animal Cookies, Banana Runtz, Blue Dream, Kush Mints, Pineapple Express, Gelato 41, Dragonfruit Rosin, and many more. The Delta Extrax products are new, so reviews aren’t out yet, but the Cake HXC products have been around for a few months, and the reviews are mixed. As with most alternative cannabinoid products, some people love them and some don’t. Some say they have little effect, while others believe they’re stronger than THC. Case in point, everyone has different body chemistry and tolerances, and may react differently to the same compound or product. ConclusionOnce again, HXC and HHC are the same thing. HXC is the new name/acronym given to hexahydrocannabinol by a small number of companies who sell alternative cannabinoid products. Whether you’re looking for products or information on HXC, your best bet is to check back here or subscribe to our weekly newsletter for all the latest industry updates. Welcome all! However, there is another whole class of shrooms, which in no way resembles standard magic mushrooms. They go by two names: fly agaric and Amanita muscaria. When it comes to fly agaric vs psilocybin mushrooms, they provide different benefits, which means one type might be better for users than the other. Shrooms, shrooms, and more shrooms… Fly agaric vs psilocybin, which shrooms are right for you? Offers can be found in our best of list, so please choose wisely and use responsibly. Psilocybin mushroomsPsilocybin mushrooms – AKA magic mushrooms, are a grouping of fungi that contain psilocybin and psilocin. While it’s not always understood well, it’s actually only psilocin that matters in terms of hallucinogenic response, as psilocybin is a prodrug (compound that must be metabolized to cause effects) that metabolizes into the psilocin in the body. Psilocin is hallucinogenic, and can create sensory experiences that don’t actually exist. This means hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, or feeling something which isn’t happening. These mushrooms are also associated with bringing on feelings of euphoria, connectedness, spirituality, overall well-being, and for altering perception. Psilocin is a serotonergic compound, which means it’s an agonist on serotonin receptors. An agonist is something that activates a receptor, and makes it work more. This is similar to other psychedelic hallucinogens like LSD, MDMA, and DMT. All of these drugs are now eyed for their medical benefits, particularly with psychiatric disorders. However, they all come with one negative, and its something that should be considered by those who might be more susceptible to this negative: anxiety. This might sound weird, since some of these drugs are said to help with anxiety, but it also should be remembered that anxiety comes from different places and is experienced in different ways. Anxiety while experiencing an illness, for example, is not the same as growing up with a severe anxiety disorder that might come from years of abuse. ![]() We call these episodes ‘bad trips’. They’re characterized by negative hallucinations, which themselves are a sign of anxiety. Bad trips are essentially nothing more than panic/anxiety attacks brought on by the stimulant effects of the drugs, though this isn’t often clarified well. We know that psilocin raises serotonin, and serotonin increases heart rate and blood pressure. Imagine if you’re someone with anxiety, or very sensitive to stimulants, the ability to have your heart rate and blood pressure increased, can easily set off an attack. I am the kind of person who has a hard time with these drugs, as I am highly sensitive to stimulants. While I totally get how they are beneficial for some people, and while I’ve had a couple interesting experiences, the issue I have is that the stimulant effect they cause, for me mainly outweighs other effects. So even if psilocin has great effects that can help with all kinds of problems, those effects are harder to access for someone like me, who will immediately respond to the stimulant effect. And it’s not likely to matter much if I take them in a relaxed state or not, because they’ll automatically push me into a stimulated state, making however I started, no longer applicable. Even for a person who doesn’t have an anxiety issue or sensitivity to stimulants, taking too much can still cause this effect. Think of any stimulant drug. People who have systems that handle them well, will handle them well, but if they take too much, they’re liable to freak out too. That psychedelics cause a stimulant effect, might well be a good reason for some not to use them. But luckily, there are other options in the world of hallucinogens, besides psychedelics. Fly agaric mushroomsWe use the term ‘psychedelics’ a bit more liberally than we should. Technically, ‘psychedelics’ refers to a class of hallucinogens which are serotonergic. But that doesn’t mean all hallucinogens are psychedelics. Ketamine and PCP are not psychedelics, they’re dissociative hallucinogens, and scopolamine – the drug blown in people’s faces to make them docile and easy to rob, is a deliriant hallucinogen. The reality is that there are more kinds of hallucinogens than this, and they can occur with compounds that effect other neurotransmitters as well. Psychedelics are serotonergic, dissociative are dopaminergic, and deliriants are anticholinergic. These three classes of hallucinogens work primarily on different neurotransmitters, and therefore, give different effects, while all retaining the ability to cause hallucinations. So if there are compounds that create serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine-related hallucinogens, what about other neurotransmitters? Like GABA? GABA – gamma-aminobutyric acid, is the neurotransmitter most associated with relaxation. Benzodiazepines, and their previously popular sedative compatriots Quaaludes and barbiturates, also work on GABA. GABA is relaxing because it reduces neuronal excitability in the nervous system. Whereas serotonin is known to increase heart rate, GABA is known to slow it down. Serotonergic drugs therefore are more likely to come with a stimulant effect, whereas a GABAergic drug, will have a calming one. ![]() Fly agaric mushrooms – also known as Amanita muscaria, fit into the category of GABAergic compounds that can cause hallucinations. They’re just not officially called ‘hallucinogens’. Instead they’re called ‘poisonous mushrooms’. This is just semantics though, as psilocybin mushrooms are also poisonous mushrooms, and neither are known to actually cause death. Sometimes in taxonomy (the classification of everything in science), things can get a little confusing. Fly agaric mushrooms contain no psilocybin, but instead contain ibotenic acid and muscimol. In some ways they’re almost more well-known than psilocybin mushrooms: think Super Mario Brothers, and the classic picture of a psychedelic mushroom with a big red cap and white spots…that’s a fly agaric mushroom. They’re even arguably the reason for a lot of Christmas mythology including Santa Clause and flying reindeer. Ibotenic acid is a neurotoxin in high amounts, and has a mode of action on glutamate receptors. It’s broken down by the liver into muscimol, the other main component of these mushrooms. Muscimol is a strong GABA agonist, meaning it forces the brain to release more GABA, which calms the body down. While several drugs can work as agonists on GABA receptors, muscimol has an advantage of binding directly to GABAA receptors, as GABA does itself. This is unlike benzodiazepines and barbiturates, which bind to separate receptors in different places. Muscimol also effects more than one GABA subtype, giving it a combined and stronger reaction in the brain. Muscimol is known for providing sedative-hypnotic effects, and is often compared to Z-drugs (like Ambien) in that in higher doses it causes euphoria, dream-like states, possible out-of-body experiences, and synesthesia. I often wonder if Ambien was modeled in some way off of muscimol, as plant compounds themselves cannot be patented when discovered in the wild (as fly agaric mushrooms were), requiring pharma companies to create similar compounds that they can use. Fly agaric vs psilocybin mushroomsOne of the interesting things about fly agaric mushrooms is that they’re not Schedule I like psilocybin mushrooms; which is probably because they don’t originate in the US, and are less well-known. It is now possible to find them in the States, and subsequent to their appearance, they’ve entered the general conversation. I expect their continued legalization stems from the growing acceptance of entheogenic plants; as illegalizing them now might get them more attention than regulatory bodies want. Its hard to control the use of a plant that grows easily in the wild (think of cannabis). It should not be expected that fly agaric and psilocybin mushrooms produce the same effects, as the chemical compounds driving the responses are wildly different. However, they both work as hallucinogenic mushrooms, and both have a history of uses in different cultures for both spiritual and medicinal purposes. ![]() Psilocybin mushrooms keep a person up for hours because of that stimulant effect. Fly agaric mushrooms are associated with easing stress and anxiety, helping with muscular pain, and by promoting restorative sleep. They are nearly opposites in that way. According to an interview with Jeff Stevens, the CEO of Psyched Wellness – a Canadian Life Sciences Company currently producing the first approved fly agaric product, bad reactions are more about ibotenic acid. He says problems arise when “the ibotenic acid is not converted to muscimol”, at which point, “it can provide quite a nasty experience including sweating, nausea, loss of balance and involuntary bodily movements.” In terms of his company’s research into muscimol, Stevens said his company is looking at it for “indications for various mental and physical health issues, including sleep, insomnia, addiction and pain. Our initial product will be a tincture designed to provide users with a calming and relaxing effect.” ConclusionThose looking for a hallucinogenic experience – for medicinal value or funsies – and who specifically want to avoid the anxiety of a bad trip, should remember that there are different hallucinogens, and they’re not all stimulants. If you want the ‘downer’ hallucinogenic experience instead of the ‘upper’ version, something like fly agaric mushrooms, or ketamine, might be your hallucinogens of choice. It’s always good to know about the drug you’re doing, and luckily, with psychedelics/hallucinogens becoming more socially acceptable, more information is available. Though psilocybin mushrooms, and other serotonergic hallucinogens, might be great for some people, that whole idea of a ‘bad trip’ is important; and that it essentially resembles an anxiety attack. If you’re someone prone to anxiety, or super sensitive to stimulants, consider which hallucinogen is best for your particular situation. After all, you’ve got a lot of options, and there’s no point in having a bad trip. Welcome to the site! Via https://cannadelics.com/2022/08/16/battle-of-the-shrooms-fly-agaric-vs-psilocybin-which-is-best-for-you/ Elections are always a time for new things, as new entrants come with their own ideas, and push for their own measures. Such is the case in Colombia. After recent elections caused a changeover in government, it looks more and more like the new government and president of Colombia are in favor of legal marijuana. Colombia has a new government, and it looks to have its sights on legal marijuana. We’re a news platform that specializes in cannabis and psychedelics reporting. The electionColombia held its elections back on the 22nd of May, with runoff elections taking place on June 19th, as no candidates could win 50% in the first vote. The standing president Ivan Duque was barred from running due to term limitations. The runoff election was close, with Gustavo Petro of the Colombia Humana party winning by a hair. He beat out competitor Rodolfo Hernández of the Independent party 50.42% to 47.35%. Petro is the first left-wing candidate to make it to the presidency in Colombia, and his running mate, Francia Márquez, is now the first afro-Colombian vice-president, and the second female to have this office. On August 7th, 2022, Petro officially took office. Duque, who he replaced, was of the Democratic Centre Party, a center-right, and much more conservative, party. The elections came about a year after large protests erupted in response to Duque’s government attempting to increase taxes, and for general corruption. The protests picked up speed April 28th, and tens of thousands of people took to the streets, creating bloody standoffs between civilians and police in big cities. As Duque made statements about revising the tax plan, the protests grew bigger, culminating on May 1st (Worker’s Day in Colombia), and leading Duque to actually withdraw the tax plan. ![]() This didn’t end the protests, and they carried on partly from the police brutality itself. It was reported that by May 21st, over 2,000 instances of police brutality were reported, along with multiple accusations of sexual violence, and the disappearance of about 200 people. These riots continued on for several months. In light of this long-lasting and violent disruption, it’s not shocking that the new voted-in government is essentially politically the opposite. New government of Colombia favors legal marijuanaNew presidencies often bring about change, and this one is no different. How much is just talk, and how much follow-thru there will be, however, remains to be seen. Petro has held to a stance of ending the general war on drugs in the country. In a summit for mayors held on August 10th he began talking about how a legal cannabis market could work in Colombia. He has also made it clear that he wants to institute a policy to release prisoners who are already incarcerated for cannabis crimes. Referencing places like many US states that have worked to release prisoners, he said “If we are going to legalize cannabis, are we going to keep all those people imprisoned in overcrowded prisons, or has the time come to release many people from prisons simply because they were criminalized for something that is legal in much of the United States.” Part of the push relates to how it can help the economy, particularly in small towns. He made it sound like this could be done without instituting licensing requirements. He brought up opening an export market, as well, to work with countries legally able to import cannabis. He said, “We’ll see if [cannabis can be] exported and we’ll earn a few dollars because half of humanity [has legalized it].” Petro on ending the war on drugsPetro isn’t just looking to make Colombia a legal marijuana country, he also wants a new approach to how drugs are treated in general, in the country, and beyond. In his inaugural address last week upon taking office, Petro spoke about bringing the war on drugs to an end, citing the need for understanding on an international scale that drug criminalization isn’t a working method. Of this, he said, “Of course, peace is possible if you change, for example, the politics against drugs, for example, seen as a war, for a policy of strong prevention of consumption in developed societies… It is time for a new international convention that accepts that the drug war has failed, which has left a million murdered Latin Americans during these 40 years and that leaves 70,000 Americans dead from drug overdoses each year. The war on drugs strengthened the mafias and weakened the states.” ![]() He continued, “The war on drugs has led states to commit crimes and has evaporated the horizon of democracy. Are we going to expect that another million Latin Americans will be murdered and that the number of deaths from overdoses in the United States will rise to 200,000 every year? Or rather, will we exchange failure for a success that allows Colombia and Latin America to live in peace?” What was the US reaction to Colombia’s new president trying to find a way around old bad habits that have only resulted in death and destruction? The same day Petro spoke to the summit of mayors, Biden released a memorandum to the defense secretary, which authorized “interdiction of aircraft reasonably suspected to be primarily engaged in illicit drug trafficking in that country’s airspace”, referring to Colombia. His reasoning? That it’s “necessary because of the extraordinary threat posed by illicit drug trafficking to the national security of that country.” He added on that “Colombia has appropriate procedures in place to protect against innocent loss of life in the air and on the ground in connection with such interdiction, which includes effective means to identify and warn an aircraft before the use of force is directed against the aircraft.” Is he trying to say that Colombia is responsible for all Colombian deaths caused by the US military, because Colombia should just know how to deal with it? Kind of sounds like it… Which is a gross statement no matter how you look at it, as it attempts to relinquish guilt by the US military for the unnecessary killing of innocent Colombian people. What about the bill and the ruling? If you follow the news, you know that there have been a couple other happenings related to cannabis legalization in Colombia. First off, there is a bill currently circulating in Colombia’s congress. Sen. Gustavo Bolívar introduced legislation in July to establish a recreational adult-use market in the country. This is similar to an initiative he tried to pass two years ago, which failed. He hopes that now with a more liberal government, the bill has a better shot of going through. As a result of the election, the Colombia Humana party holds the most seats in congress, making the bill that much more likely to pass. The thing is, three years ago, the Constitutional Court of Colombia made a ruling that knocked down a ban on the public consumption of cannabis. Unlike in other countries where constitutional court rulings have been upheld, and led to subsequent legalization measures, this doesn’t seem to be the case in Colombia. The reason for the case was to combat an overreaching police code, and even pro-legalization officials like Bolívar were not shocked that it was never adopted directly. Even so, it does exist. In 2019, the Constitutional Court overruled parts of a police ban put in place by former President Duque in 2017, which expressly banned public cannabis consumption, and which the court said was in violation of the rights of citizens. According to the court, the police code violated a 1994 decriminalization (and subsequent 2012 ruling) that allows small amounts of drugs for personal use (up to 20 grams). The police code implemented the ability of law enforcement to search for and confiscate drugs meant for this purpose. ![]()
Then-president Duque’s response? To say that though he does accept it and respect it, that it doesn’t really matter, citing the violation of children’s rights as the reason. He stated “The free determination of personality is not above the free determination of drug addiction”.. and that police could keep right on confiscating drugs and imposing penalties on those possessing drugs, even if in personal use quantities. As it stands now, cops are able to search and take drugs, however, no criminal charges apply if under 20 grams. This is a great example of a constitutional court not working to uphold its ruling, and a government not being respectful of a court ruling. Whether it was an oversight or not, the ruling did establish the ban on public use as unconstitutional. I wonder if this might be revisited in the future in light of the new president and new administration. For now, Colombia maintains cannabis as illegal for recreational use, with a sometimes up-held personal use measure of up to 20 grams. It does, however, seem that change is on the way. ConclusionThe new government in Colombia is already much more supportive of legal marijuana than the last government. When exactly it will happen, or how, has not been made clear, but with a new bill circulating, a left-leaning government, and a new president who is pro-legalization in office, it certainly looks like Colombia will join the ranks of the legalized, soon enough. Will we get up to 25 legal states by the end of elections? 2022 elections are going to be exciting with up to six states voting on recreational cannabis ballot measures. This could mean that by the end of elections, half the states of the US will be legal! Missouri and Amendment 3On Tuesday August 9th, the state of Missouri announced that in November elections, it will hold a ballot measure so voters can decide if they want to legalize recreational cannabis. This ballot was not a for-sure thing in the beginning, with activists originally looking like they couldn’t get enough petition signatures to get the initiative on the ballot. By law, at least six out of eight congressional districts need to reach the signature minimum to make it on. As of Tuesday, the petition was certified by Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. The activist group Legal Missouri 2022 was behind the initiative. Said campaign manager John Payne in a press release Tuesday, “Our campaign volunteers collected 100,000 signatures, on top of paid signature collection. That outpouring of grassroots support among Missourians who want to legalize, tax and regulate cannabis made all the difference.” Should it go through, this Amendment 3 forces a change to the constitution of the state, amending its policy on marijuana so that residents 21 and above can purchase and use the drug. In fact, should it go through, it would go into effect as early as the end of this year. This is an incredibly fast implementation, because the amendment is already written, instead of a measure instructing the legislature to come up with laws. The new amendment includes the following guidelines for the cannabis industry:
The reason for this ballot measure is because Missouri’s republican-led congress has repeatedly killed previous marijuana reform bills. As ballot measures are kind of the new thing in weed legalization, advocates decided it was best to take it to the people. Like many other cannabis bills, this one comes with a provision to erase past cannabis convictions for non-violent marijuana crimes, and for those who didn’t sell to minors, or get arrested for marijuana-related driving infractions. Explained Legal Missouri 2022’s Alan Zagier, “We’re talking about people who may still be on probation or parole or even had a conviction and did their time and paid their fine but yet it still comes up and is a hindrance in housing or employment.” He said the bill would “Provide a fresh start and wipe the slate clean for really tens of thousands of Missourians who each year find themselves arrested for low level drug offenses.” ![]() South Dakota ballot measureMissouri isn’t the only state letting the people decide the fate of recreational cannabis in November. Another state is South Dakota, and for this state, it means voting on such a measure for the second time. In the November 2020 elections, South Dakota voters passed two ballot measures to legalize both medicinal and recreational cannabis on the same day, via Measure 26 and Amendment A. And though the story should have ended there, Governor Kristi Noem proceeded to conspire with law enforcement to bring a case against the win, in order to reverse it on the grounds that Amendment A broke the state’s law of only allowing single-measure ballots. Noem’s participation was made clear when she made an executive order on February 8th, 2021. When this was appealed, it went to the Supreme Court. As the court is helmed by Noem appointee Christina Klinger, the ruling predictably upheld Noem’s order, ending the recreational legalization, and ostensibly taking away a voted-in win by her own constituents. Now, the state has a new ballot measure ready to go this November, and considering the last one went through, there’s a pretty good chance this one will too. Initiated Measure 27 would legalize recreational use, as well as allowing the possession and distribution of up to one ounce. Individuals would be allowed to have three plants each, with a max of six plants per household. More than other states, this is an important ballot measure, because it works to offset a horrible injustice done to the people of the state, by their own governor. …And MarylandThe third state with a confirmed ballot measure to legalize recreational cannabis in the upcoming November elections, is Maryland. On November 8th, residents of Maryland can vote on the Maryland Marijuana Legalization Amendment, which would allow residents 21 and above to access recreational cannabis starting in July 2023. The measure orders the State’s legislature to come up with laws to govern this new cannabis industry. Maryland already has a decriminalization policy in place from 2014, which allows the possession of up to 10 grams or less without criminal sanctions. The state also has a medical program, instituted back in 2013. ![]() The current measure stated as House Bill (HB) 1, and was approved in the House by a vote of 96-34 in February of this year. Less than two months later, the Senate also passed the bill with a vote of 94-39, showing overall mass support in all of the State’s legislature. For whatever reason, instead of simply allowing the bill to pass into law, the legislature decided to pass the vote onto the people; similar to what happened in New Jersey, which subsequently voted in its own recreational bill in 2020. This means, should the measure get a positive vote, it was passed by both the state congress, as well as the people. More cannabis ballot measures: Arkansas, North Dakota and Oklahoma too?On August 3rd it was reported that the Arkansas State Board of Election Commissioners rejected a measure to allow a recreational legalization measure from appearing on the 2022 ballot. The board approval was a second stipulation, as activists already turned in more than enough signatures to get the measure on the ballot. Then, in a turn of events, the State’s supreme court ordered the initiative to be allowed. The case was brought by the group Responsible Growth Arkansas in response to the Board of Election Commissioners refusal to certify the measure. What’s the new stipulation? The case isn’t over. So though the measure now must be on the ballot, whether the votes get counted remains to be seen until the case is officially settled. The placement on the ballot is because the case was expedited to force the certification from the Board in time for elections, though the Board can still argue its case for merit of its denial. Should the board ultimately win, the vote will be null and void. Responsible Growth Arkansas turned in over 193,000 signatures which is over twice the number of necessary signatures for the ballot. North Dakota already turned in more signatures than necessary for the North Dakota Marijuana Legalization Initiative, which would legalize recreational cannabis for adults 21+. The state requires 15,582 signatures, and the group New Approach North Dakota collected 25,762. Currently the signatures are awaiting verification in order for the initiative to get certified. Unless a major issue comes up, it looks like North Dakota will let its people choose the fate of cannabis in the state come November. This is the second time such a vote was put to the people, as a 2018 measure for the same thing, did not pass. Oklahoma is also trying to get an initiative on the ballot this November. The group Oklahomans for Sensible Marijuana Laws collected more than 164,000 signatures, much more than the necessary 94,911. The state is awaiting the verification of these signatures. In the meantime, the attorney general’s office released a revised version of the ballot in order to make it comply with applicable laws. The signature verification was outsourced to third-party company Western Petition Systems, and it looks like, once again, unless something weird comes up, Oklahomans will decide themselves if cannabis should be legalized in November. ConclusionRecently, cannabis ballot measures to legalize recreational use have been mainly positive, indicating a strong likelihood that as many as six new states might join the recreational crew come fall elections. If that happens, the number of legalized states increases to 25, officially signaling that 50% of states are going against federal mandate. Though its not often reported this way, this will likely force the federal government to quickly legalize, so as not to look weak compared to its states. This should be a very interesting election when it comes to both state recreational cannabis legalizations, as well as federal government reaction. ![]() Thanks for stopping by! Via https://cannadelics.com/2022/08/13/2022-cannabis-ballot-measures-up-to-six-states-voting-for-recreational/ Magic mushrooms are the new buzz word, but they don’t all fall into just one category. Sure, there are psilocybin magic mushrooms, but there are also amanita mushrooms, for a different kind of high and unique medical advantages. Now, the company Psyched Wellness is offering amanita mushroom products, and the best part is, it’s all legal. We all know about psilocybin mushrooms, right? Well, now there’s a new mushroom to know about, Amanita muscaria, and these mushrooms are not only legal, but come with a host of medical benefits. If you’re into independent drug reporting concerning the cannabis and psychedelics fields, this is the publication for you. We provide the Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter so readers can stay updated on current events, as well as have access to tons of deals on cannabis products including popular cannabinoid compounds Delta 8 THC, and HHC, and all upcoming hallucinogenic products. Check the ‘best of’ lists for offers, and choose the products you’re most comfortable using. What are amanita mushrooms? When you hear the term ‘magic mushrooms’ the go-to association is with psilocybin mushrooms, the shrooms readily found in North and South America, which cause trips and highs by activating serotonin receptors. These mushrooms, along with LSD, DMT, and other compounds, are considered psychedelic hallucinogens. This group of psychedelic hallucinogens doesn’t include other drugs we often think of as psychedelics, like ketamine. That drug, along with PCP and DXM are all dissociative hallucinogens. There is a third group as well, called deliriant hallucinogens, which includes scopolamine, the drug used to rob people by taking away their ability to argue with perpetrators. These three represent serotonergic, dopaminergic, and anticholinergic hallucinogens only. This is where amanita mushrooms come in, as hallucinogens that act on a different neurotransmitter, GABA. Amanita muscaria mushrooms – AKA fly agaric, (for their ability to attract and trap flies), are also wild mushrooms that produce some trippy effects, but with an entirely different mode of action then psilocybin mushrooms. Amanita mushrooms are considered poisonous mushrooms, and contain a compound called muscimol, which is GABAergic. This means it acts as an agonist on GABA receptors, and does so in the same way as GABA itself; rather than attaching to different receptor sites like benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and Quaaludes. ![]() These mushrooms also contain ibotenic acid, which is the compound more likely to make a person sick. This compound is a prodrug (a compound which is biologically inactive until metabolization), and is metabolized in the body to become muscimol. This is similar to psilocybin, which is also a prodrug, and which is useless in the human body until it changes into the other compound found in magic mushrooms, and the real compound of interest, psilocin. Whereas psilocin acts on serotonin receptors, creating a stimulant response along with its psychedelic effects, muscimol acts on GABA receptors that calm the body down. Amanita mushrooms therefore won’t cause the same kind of ‘bad trip’ as psilocybin mushrooms, since there’s no stimulant effect. They do, however, come with their own reasons for caution in how they’re prepared and eaten, so as not to make a user feel sick. Neither mushroom group is known to cause death (despite the name ‘poisonous’), so even a bad experience with either is only temporary. Amanita mushrooms are less well-known in the Americas as they’re not native to this region. For the most part they’re found around Northern Europe and Russia (particularly Siberia), and factor into medicinal and shamanistic traditions in those regions. This is probably why they aren’t scheduled in the US Controlled Substances list, which makes them legal to have and use in the US. A little about Psyched Wellness & CalmPsyched Wellness is a publicly traded company on the Canadian Securities Exchange under (CSE:PSYC), which used to be Duncan Park Holdings Corporation. Based out of Toronto, Psyched Wellness is a life sciences company which just finished a pilot run for its new amanita mushrooms product, Calm. This main offering of the company, Calm, is the first approved amanita mushroom product to hit US markets. According to the company, its made 100% from amanita mushroom caps, is lab tested, detoxified to ensure no bad effects (no ibotenic acid), and can be used to “reduce stress, ease muscular tension, and promote restorative sleep.” The company is taking preorders for the product right now, and interested buyers can reserve themselves a 1 fluid ounce bottle for $49.99. Products are expected to officially hit the market in the fall. Calm registers as a dietary supplement, which is advertised as ethically sourced. The main component, according to the company’s site, is AME-1 which was developed in the Psyched Wellness laboratories to mimic the naturally extracted compound muscimol. It does not contain naturally occurring muscimol. As this is not a controlled substance, and doesn’t require a prescription, the company is free to sell it without the same complications that currently exist with psilocybin mushrooms, which are still federally illegal as they sit in Schedule I of the controlled substances list. ![]() The company is looking to expand its product offering in the future. According to CEO Jeffrey Stevens, “It has been a long journey to get to this point, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my co-founder, David Shisel, our team, KGK Science and Vantage Hemp for all of their hard work and commitment to get us to where we are today. The most exciting part for me is that we have just scratched the surface with respect to potential uses and delivery forms for AME-1. Stay tuned for more to come from Psyched.” Aside from this compound, the company also sells accompanying sweatshirts, bags, T-shirts, phone covers, water bottles, hats, and mugs, some emblazoned with the well-known image of the red capped mushroom with white spots. While Super Mario Brothers certainly kept this image alive for years, its new entrance into the US sales market is sure to give it an extra popularity boost in the near future. A bit more on muscimol from amanita mushroomsFor many people, these mushrooms represent something completely new. Whereas psilocybin mushrooms have been used in the Americas for millennia, both for medical and recreational purposes, amanita mushrooms are not well-known to this part of the world. They are therefore a mystery to Americans in terms of what they can do, what to be wary of, and how they differ from standard magic mushrooms. In an interview with Technology Networks, Jeff Stevens gave some insight into these ‘other’ hallucinogenic mushrooms. Of muscimol he says, “Muscimol is one of the main psychoactive compounds found in the Amanita muscaria mushroom along with ibotenic acid and muscarine. Although it does have psychoactive properties, the effect is very different from psilocybin or psilocin. It reacts with the GABAA receptor and when ingested, it can provide feelings of euphoria and tranquility, an altered sense of hearing and taste, changes to sensory perception and vivid dreams.” He goes on to stipulate that “If it is not processed properly, where the ibotenic acid is not converted to muscimol, it can provide quite a nasty experience including sweating, nausea, loss of balance and involuntary bodily movements.” This helps explain how amanita mushrooms can cause negative effects, but don’t have to so long as the right usage techniques are employed. In terms of why we’re only hearing about muscimol now, he says, “We believe the reason muscimol has not been studied to a large degree is because it has been mislabeled as poisonous and as such was overlooked. As a result, there’s not been a lot of scientific studies conducted on muscimol so groups like Psyched Wellness need to start from the ground up, making it more time consuming and more expensive.” ![]() When it comes to the legality of the mushrooms, he explains, “Amanita muscaria are considered food and are principally regulated under the Federal Drug Act and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act in Canada and the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and The Nutrition Labelling and Education Act in the USA. As a result, the challenges that other compounds face with extraction, regulation and or administration are not a factor.” Psyched Wellness has been going over accumulated research on these mushrooms, looking for different applications. Says Stevens, “we believe muscimol could show positive indications for various mental and physical health issues, including sleep, insomnia, addiction and pain.” ConclusionAmanita mushrooms represent a different option in the world of hallucinogenic treatment. It’s not just about standard psychedelics anymore, and amanita mushrooms, with their main psychoactive constituent muscimol, offer an entirely different approach to helping with mental and physical health. Via https://cannadelics.com/2022/08/13/psyched-wellness-is-bringing-you-amanita-mushrooms-and-its-all-legal/ There are many myths surrounding recreational highs. However, there are probably just as many truths. One person’s individual experience can soon spread and become gospel – drug scripture that everyone abides by. This is useful if the original case is based on fact, but very problematic if it’s not. Take the war on drugs, for example, it successfully mixed lies with truths to change opinion on drugs forever. Well, using sugar as a way to help stop a high is one of those stories. Does it work or does it not? The belief is that sugary drinks or sweets can help end a cannabis sesh quicker, as well as also a hallucinogenic trip. I’ve used this method myself from time to time. Let’s see what truths or lies sit beneath. To stay current on everything important happening in the industry, subscribe to The Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter. Head over to our “Best-of” lists to get these deals, and remember to enjoy responsibly! Myths Around DrugsIt’s hard to ever know the truths surrounding drugs, especially when each person will have their own individual experiences. A simple example of this is that some people enjoy letting go and feeling far from their usual selves, whereas others would find that their own version of hell. This means then that already, before we’ve even discussed the science behind it, people will have different opinions. This is especially prevalent as many substances are dictated by how you’re feeling before you take them. Alcohol, for instance, can easily turn someone violent or sad if they were feeling unhappy before consuming it. Another example is ecstasy – if someone is nervous about taking it then every little sweaty moment or increased heart rate may easily trigger their anxieties. That is why set and setting are so important when talking about all substances, despite the fact that they’re usually referred to when discussing psychedelics. Set is short for ‘mindset’, meaning that your feelings beforehand will dictate how your trip goes. ‘Setting’ is self-explanatory, meaning that where you are who you’re with will also affect the positives or negatives of your experience. BDP writes: “People find that set and setting have a profound impact on the psychedelic experience. The more supportive the set and setting, the more likely the experience will be positive. In opposition, a less than ideal set and setting will increase the likelihood of a negative or challenging experience.Whilst being mindful of set and setting doesn’t guarantee a ‘good trip’, it’s an effective way of nudging the experience of taking psychedelic drugs in a positive direction.” The reason people believe the set and setting theory to be true is that many agree with its sentiment. Many have experienced bad trips and many have experienced good trips, which they believe was dictated by their set and setting. But does this make the theory true? Or is it just another one of those word-of-mouth nuances that can assist people when they need it? It’s hard to prove these sorts of things, but what about the more exact scientific theories? Those ones that are surely easier to prove. Like, for example, whether sugar does help to quicken the ending of unpleasant highs. Sugar and CannabisThe reason why many people believe that sugar helps to end highs early is because it’s what you’re told to do when you’re feeling unpleasant. When I first told my father that I had smoked a joint – I was about 15 and I’d literally barely had a puff – he sat me down and told me that if I ever threw a whitey and felt awful, that I should drink a diet coke to feel better. When I asked him why, he said, ‘because it will raise your blood sugar and stop you from feeling so bad’. I didn’t really understand it at first, especially as when you feel that awful you can barely bring yourself to eat or drink anything. But nonetheless I took it as gospel and used the theory many times whenever my friends found themselves ‘overdosing’ on cannabis. As you’ll probably know, when you’re growing up and experimenting with drugs, this kind of thing happens a lot. I’d pull out a can of the finest cornershop diet coke I could buy and help my intoxicated mate sip it down, feeling like I’d saved their evening. But in reality, had I actually done anything? Well, Way of Leaf writes: ![]() “When you smoke cannabis your blood sugar drops, convincing your body that it is hungry. This response is how our body reacts on a day to day basis in order to keep us nourished and not starving (imagine if our body never knew that it needed food?). When your blood sugar drops your body is screaming for more energy so it craves a meal. While this alone won’t dampen your blissfully high feelings, consuming foods with high sugar content can – which is often the type of food that those with the munchies reach for.” As you can see, when you consume cannabis your blood sugar drops, meaning that your body does require energy. Oddly enough, the munchies are almost the other side of the same coin. When you’re experiencing a pleasant high, it’s likely that your body will start craving sweet and carb-filled foods, but when you digest them it will be a far more pleasurable feeling than if you’re sipping a coke whilst experiencing a whitey moment. Nonetheless, the same thing happens. The high slowly subsides. Or does it? The answer seems to be yes. The cannabinoids within cannabis, mainly THC, have blood sugar lowering qualities. Anything that counteracts this will, in turn, reduce the effects of the THC – the main psychoactive element of weed. This means that digesting sugar whilst high will speed up the process of ending your high. Sugar and PsychedelicsCannabis isn’t the only drug that sugar can supposedly reduce the effects of. Psychedelic drugs like acid and magic mushrooms are also, theoretically, conquered by sugary drinks and sweets. When I was travelling in Amsterdam and purchased some magic truffles I was told exactly this. Magic truffles are legal in the Netherlands and have much the same level of potency as psilocybin magic mushrooms, except they are picked from underground, in their infancy. When I bought a box of the strongest truffles in Amsterdam I was told by the shopkeeper – as well as by the packaging itself – that eating or drinking sugar would help quicken the end of the trip. But does this actually work? Does psilocybin, like cannabis, also lower your blood pressure? On a blog called Shroomery, one user denies this sentiment, saying: “Actually I don’t believe sugar kills a trip.I like to eat sweets during the come on and it never has affected any of my trips to a noticeable degree. Also the aztecs ate the mushrooms with honey. And chocolate even is a weak MAOI according to Terence McKenna Land. It could still work as a placebo however: when you strongly believe it will help kill the trip it might just work to some degree” So is digesting sugar to stop a trip just a placebo? Now, in some cases, placebos can be as effective as actual remedies. But the issue with placebos is that once you know the scientific truth, they no longer work. So, the question is, is there no proof that sugar genuinely does affect a hallucinogenic trip? There’s a product known as ‘trip stopper’, which contains the glucose dextrose that can supposedly neutralise the trip. The product description says: “Minimizes the bad trip effects. The valerian helps you relax, which will decrease the effects and helps the dextrose to neutralize the psilocybin effects. Use if the trip you are in takes less pleasant turns, take the 2 Dextro tablets in your mouth and let it dissolve slowly. The dextrose helps to neutralize the trip effects. Then take the 4 Valerian capsules and take them with a large glass of water.” ![]() Of course it is possible that these products are simply taking advantage of a social belief based on a placebo. But, then again, if sugar doesn’t affect a trip in any way, then why do so many people believe that it does? Perhaps there is some truth in it, or alternatively the only way to find out is to try it for yourself. ConclusionIt has been known that sugar can help to reduce the effects of cannabis highs and psychedelic trips. This theory has been passed down generations and is often given as advice to new users of recreational substances. With cannabis, it seems that there is some truth behind it. THC lowers blood sugar, which is then counteracted when sugar is digested. However, what about psychedelics? According to magic truffles packaging and certain products, It seems that sugars and sweeteners can neutralize the effects of psilocybin. However, there doesn’t seem to be enough actual evidence to back this up, excerpt for word of mouth. But what do you think? Welcome all! But what exactly are these new compounds? Are they natural or synthetic? What makes them different from one another? And what kind of products contain them? Head over to our “Best-of” lists to get these deals, and remember to enjoy responsibly! What are high-potency cannabis products?High-potency cannabis products are just that, consumer weed products that contain the more psychoactive compounds found in the cannabis plant, as well as some new, synthetic variations. The two categories of cannabinoids that actually produce these type of effects are THCs (tetrahydrocannabinols) and HHCs (hexahydrocannabinols). When it comes to high-potency cannabis products, they can fall into one of three categories: products that contain only one high-potency cannabinoid, such as THC-P only products. You can also have products with a blend of high-potency cannabinoids, like THC-O, Delta 10, THCjd, and THCh mixed together. Or, you can have a product with very high concentrations of any psychoactive cannabinoid, like edibles with 100mg or more of delta 9 per serving. Typically, high-potency products consist of vapes, edibles, and concentrates. Flower products can be infused with stronger cannabinoids, but they still are not usually considered high-potency, because there really is a limit to how high one can get on smokables. More about THCs and HHCsFirst, let’s quickly review THCs. There are a total of at least 15 that we know of. There are 4 major types of THC that are naturally occurring in the plant: THCA, THCV, Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC. Then, we have a few synthetics like THC-O and Delta 10. And we also have some very trace cannabinoids (those that show up in very low amounts) like THCP. And then we have a whole slew of new THCs that very little remains known about, and these include THCjd and THCh. We also have one, naturally occurring endocannabinoid that is in the family of THCs, and that’s 11-hydroxy THC. This is not a cannabinoid per se, but a metabolite that our body creates when we digest different types of THC. So, if you’re eating naturally occurring THCs, like Delta 8 or Delta 9, the effects in our bodies will be the same, because they are all converted to 11-hydroxy THC. Synthetic THCs may have different effects, this has not been thoroughly studied. Now, on to HHCs. There are way less HHCs than THCs, so at least it doesn’t get very confusing here. With hexahydrocannabinols we have HHC, HHC-O, and HHC-P. Both HHC-O and HHC-P are synthetic. HHC-O is the acetate version of HHC. HHC-P has the same alkaline chain as HHC but with two extra carbons included. The addition of these extra carbons is believed to enhance its ability to bind to cannabinoid receptors in the human body – but again, much of this research is extremely new and limited. And while this statement rings true almost 100% of the time, the exact opposite applies to our current president, Joe Biden. While Biden has made many cannabis-related promises along the campaign trail and during his time in office, and he has supported a handful of modest reform proposals, the White House has made it very clear that his overall position on adult-use legalization has not changed over the years: he is NOT in favor. And this is despite overwhelming support for progressive policy change among voters in his party. Biden’s daughter-in-law shops for weed with secret service detailIn the most recent Biden-cannabis drama, it was reported last month by the Daily Mail that Melissa Cohen, wife of Hunter Biden and the president’s daughter-in-law, was seen leaving a Malibu-based dispensary called 99 High Tide, and she was carrying a “small unidentified purchase”. Additionally, it was noted that following Cohen was a plain-clothed secret service agent. Although cannabis is recreationally legal in California and many other states, it’s still federally prohibited… and that’s not exactly where the issue lies anyway. The real problem here, is the idea of using a federally funded secret service to protect one of Biden’s relatives during a pot transaction, while tens of thousands of people remain behind bars for past nonviolent possession charges. In giving the benefit of the doubt, it’s plausible that Cohen was in the store buying one of their few high-CBD products – which are federally legal. However, while searching through their online menu, I found only one product that fit the bill; the rest of their “CBD products” contained various ratios of THC and CBD, all of which resulted in more than 0.3% THC, and thus, more than the federally legal limit. So, while there is a slight possibility that Cohen was buying CBD products at a recreational cannabis dispensary, it’s highly unlikely. ![]() It’s also worth noting that the Daily Mail’s claim of Cohen having a secret service agent in tow could not be independently verified, as the White House would not respond to questions from the various news sources who have reached out for comments. White house staffers fired for admitting to past cannabis useLast spring it was reported through various news outlets that “dozens of young White House staffers, freshly hired were abruptly told to quit, were suspended from their jobs, or otherwise punished “due to past marijuana use.” This happened after the staffers personally admitted to having used cannabis in the past on security clearance application forms. It’s worth noting that cannabis has been legal for adults 21 and older in Washington D.C. since 2015. The firings and suspensions fly in the face of the more progressive appearance that the White House is trying to present, and their new policies. In February (one month before this incident), the White House Office of Personnel Management stated that past cannabis use was no longer an automatic employment disqualifier, and that federal agencies “should exercise special care before making a determination of unsuitability” in such circumstances. Whether the staffers’ cannabis use was recreational or medical, legal or illegal, was never made clear. Of the few staffers who commented, under anonymity, the general consensus was that it would not have mattered either way. “The policies were never explained, the threshold for what was excusable and what was inexcusable was never explained,” mentioned one former employee. The reason why cannabis is considered a “national security risk” or a disqualifier for federal employment, also remains unclear. Both the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and NSA (National Security Agency) have recently updated their policies on past cannabis use, claiming that it was difficult to find hackers and cybersecurity experts with clean drug records. Biden’s sketchy history with drug reformHe’s made improvements over the years, but as his documented history shows us, there were very few D.C. lawmakers who were tougher on drugs in the 1980s and 1990s than Senator Joe Biden from Delaware. During the entirety of those 2 decades, Biden was a prominent figure in the War on Drugs and was responsible for unjustly imprisoning tens of thousands of Americans – many of which were minority or low-income individuals – on trumped up drug charges, including thousands for cannabis. ![]() Specifically, Biden introduced numerous bills with that would implement harsh penalties for those convicted of producing and distributing federally prohibited, or schedule 1, narcotics. These bills called for increased severity in dealing with first offenders, as well as longer prison sentences for all. One specific piece of legislature that comes to mind is the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which sounds good but unfortunately played a key role in mass incarcerations for drug offenses, even many who were not involved in violent crimes. Biden’s stance never really changed, with him quoted making anti-cannabis comments as recently as 2010. “There’s a difference between sending someone to jail for a few ounces [of marijuana] and legalizing it,” Biden stated in an ABC News Interview. “The punishment should fit the crime. But I think legalization is a mistake. I still believe [marijuana] is a gateway drug.” However, Biden claims that his views on marijuana have improved lately – but he can say whatever he wants, his actions, however, raise questions. Knowing that Americans want cannabis legalized and available to them, Biden completely changed his tune come January 2019. “There’s a difference between sending someone to jail for a few ounces [of marijuana] and legalizing it. The punishment should fit the crime. But I think legalization is a mistake. I still believe [marijuana] is a gateway drug,” Biden claimed. A few months later, while speaking with New Hampshire voters in May 2019, Biden commented that, “Nobody should be in jail for smoking marijuana.” He laid out a ‘plan’ for decriminalizing marijuana, if elected, and automatically expunging existing criminal records for possession by reclassifying cannabis to a Schedule II substance (it is currently a Schedule I, reserved for drugs with the highest potential for abuse and addiction). And in his last 2 years as president, he has acted on exactly zero of his cannabis-related promises. Cannabis is still not federally legal, or even decriminalized, people are still getting in trouble for it in prohibition states, and many are still serving prison time for old cannabis charges in states that have recently legalized. So again, his actions show much less support than he likes to claim. In one of his latest moves, he suggested forced rehabilitation for anyone caught with drugs. According to President Biden, “nobody convicted of a drug crime should go to prison, they should go to mandatory rehabilitation,” he emphasized at a campaign event in Kenosha, Wisconsin late last year. “Instead of building more prisons… we [should] build rehabilitation centers.” And while I completely agree with the first half of the statement, the idea of putting a cannabis user in rehab, just sounds completely asinine. Although it seems that he’s trying (a little bit), at best, he’s just very out of touch with what modern day drug policy should look like, and what his voters are asking for. ![]() And Vice President Kamala Harris is not much better, claiming to support legalization and even bragging about having smoked in the past, but her resume says otherwise. During her career as San Francisco district attorney, Harris oversaw roughly 1,900 marijuana convictions (1,500 of which were African American males, for the record). NORML executive director Erik Altieri describes her history on drug reform has been “problematic,” and her “record is not one anyone would qualify as progressive, particularly when it comes to marijuana.” Biden pardons a few cannabis offendersAnd when I say “a few”, I truly mean that. More specifically, he pardoned 3 people and commuted the sentences of 78 offenders, out of the estimated 40,000 people who remain locked up on weed charges. Before getting further into the details, let’s quickly go over the difference between pardons and commuted sentences A pardon completely removes the conviction as if it never happened, so the person’s record is clear, whereas a commuted sentence still stands but the punishment is reduced or completely revoked. The news of the pardons and commuted sentences were announced on Tuesday, April 25th of this year. All of the pardoned offenders had been previously released to serve time in their homes during the pandemic, a privilege that was granted to a total of 8.300 inmates because of COVID-related issues and prison overcrowding. One of the pardons given, and eight of the commuted sentences, were related to cannabis. Now, it’s important to note that this was not part of some cannabis-related project or anything special that Biden was doing. These pardons and commuted sentences were done in clemency grants as part of Biden’s first year in office – and this is standard for ALL presidents during their first year. Call it a presidential ‘get out of jail free’ card, if you will, but regardless, it had nothing to do with commuting the sentences of cannabis users specifically, even though some of the offenders who got pardoned and commuted were convicted of non-violent marijuana crimes. New cannabis legalization bill from Chuck SchumerThe reason this matters (well, it always matters, but the reason it’s more relevant now) is because a new decriminalization bill was introduced by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Thursday, July 21st. The bill isn’t exactly new, Schumer has been working on it for years, waiting for the right time to make it official. The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act would effectively decriminalize cannabis at the federal level, but would allow individual states to regulate it as they see fit. So, some states can still choose to keep it illegal, although that seems unlikely. That said, it’s hard to say how likely it is that this bill will even pass at all. Yes, Schumer circulated the bill around for the last few months getting feedback for how to make it foolproof, but there are still a few major potential obstacles in the way. ![]() First, we have the Senate. Although legalization/decriminalization bills have passed the House of Representatives, they have all died when reaching the Senate for a vote. Beyond the Senate, the main concern here is Biden. Should the bill make it his desk, will he off on it? He claims to support decriminalization (hopefully more so now that we all know his daughter-in-law shops at dispensaries), but his history, as well as his areas of focus while in office, say otherwise. Final thoughtsIn all fairness, it’s not surprising to see an old man stuck in such dated ways. It’s reminiscent of many of our own grandparents who just won’t get with the times. But a politician should be more in touch with what the general population wants, and data from Politico consistently shows that roughly 70% of Americans want cannabis legalized. With this new bill in the works, it’s very possible that the ball will soon be in Biden’s court – and it will be interesting to see what he does with it. Welcome all! The post Double Standards: Will Biden Keep His Cannabis Reform Promises? appeared first on Cannadelics. Via https://cannadelics.com/2022/08/11/double-standards-will-biden-keep-his-cannabis-reform-promises/ Psychedelics and art go hand in hand, making it no surprise that the Psychedelic Art niche has been growing in popularity in recent years. Not only is art simply more enjoyable and fun to interpret different pieces of art when you’re high, but certain drugs are known to improve divergent thinking in already creative individuals. Now, when I say “psychedelic” art exhibitions, what I really mean is immersive art. Art installations that pull you in and make you feel the art with your entire body and all the senses – akin to how one would feel on a psychedelic trip. So, while getting high and going to a quiet art gallery may not be the most exciting of plans, you can certainly trip out and have a lot of fun wandering around a labyrinth of experiential art. Head over to our “Best-of” lists to get these deals, and remember to enjoy responsibly! More about psychedelics, art, and the sensesWe, as humans, have five basic senses that help us navigate through the world: touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. The organs associated with each sense gather information and send it to the brain, which helps us perceive the world around us so we can better function better in it. In addition to our five most fundamental senses, there are some others that we actually cannot live without, like spatial awareness and balance. Psychedelics are the only category of drugs a person can use that will affect ALL the senses, as well as cause visual/auditory/tactile hallucinations and alter thought processes, emotions, and perception of time. Because of this, a type of art described as “psychedelic” or “immersive” has become frequently associated with these substances and the psychonaut community. Some common elements of psychedelic art include fractal designs in high contrast, portraits with distorted perspectives, fabrics in loud colors and swirling patterns, and things of that nature. Art critic Ken Johnson explains it well in his book, Are You Experienced? Johnson argues that “All kinds of things look better to the stoned observer, but many works of art produced in the 1960s seemed to require not just a new sort of taste but a heightened, Zen-like state of attentiveness, a kind of receptivity to the subtleties of space and time and forms and materials that could readily be achieved by ingesting a psychotropic drug.” So, in other words, his theory is both psychedelic art (which is made with the psychonaut in mind) as well as more nuanced projects would have greater appeal to the intoxicated observer as opposed to the sober one. Simply put, all art is better when you’re high, especially when you’re stoned or tripping. Meow Wolf – Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Denver, and Houston, USAMeow Wolf exhibitions are known to defy reality with their fully immersive, incredibly interactive, and very unique spaces. Using a combination of narrative story-telling, multimedia, and of course, fun colors and lights, the goal of Meow Wolf is to transport viewers into a new, yet somewhat familiar, realm. The company is based in Santa Fe with locations in New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, and soon, Texas. They announced earlier this year that they will be opening two new exhibitions in the Lone Star State relatively soon. “Slowly but surely, you are transported into unknown spaces,” Meow Wolf’s CEO, Jose Tolosa, said. “Unknown spaces of really amazing visual and auditory and light art and technology that really triggers all your senses. “Our exhibitions are non-linear. We don’t tell you to start here and end here, and we don’t tell you where to go. You go wherever you want. They’re highly interactive.” ![]() Each space consists of a unique, puzzle-like story that visitors follow and solve through each exhibition. For those who want to fully engage, the story can take hours to complete, but not everyone wants to dive in so deeply, which is perfectly fine. Visitors can choose to solve the stories/puzzles, or just explore a little bit until they’re ready to leave. “The experience is meant for all generations,” Tolosa said, adding that “a child would go in and have an amazing experience, but then it would be a totally different experience than a teen, an adult or even a senior. It has those unique characteristics that have the ability to really trigger the human mind. Ours is a space that mixes in the sculptural and the audio and the video and the lighting and story and narrative and technology, which incorporates a lot more artistic forms in that one space.” Future Shock – London, UKCoined as “Art that wraps around you”, Future Shock takes sensory, new-age art to another level. As of now, it’s a temporary exhibition set up by 180 Studios and running until the end of August. The show includes sixteen different installations, each bringing together different elements of physical and virtual artwork using a variety of different methods and technologies. The exhibition is set up in an underground car garage, and is basically like a large maze that you can wander through and get lost in. “It is very, very entrancing,” says art critic Tabish Khan. “You love the sound, the visuals. I would say that there are some works that I found a lot stronger than others. There are some works which have like a deeper message and they carry through stronger than the others. And there are some that we think visually, I’m very impressed. Do I get something more from this? Maybe not.” One of the installations comes complete with rotating mirrors, laser lights, and colorful kinetic sculptures – all situated in a pitch-black room. Another installation takes place in a desert-like environment populated by digital humans. Rather than a profound artistic message, Future Shock experimenting with technology and psychedelic digital worlds. Making visitors feel the art, rather than analyze it. For example, one of their largest and most popular installations is one called “Vortex”, created by a Barcelona-based multidisciplinary art studio, Hamill Industries. In Vortex, light projectors, smoke effects, and a specific soundtrack are used to create a giant colorful smoke ring that move in synchronicity with the music. According to the creators, this particular piece is about experiencing the beautiful musical sound through alternative senses, light sight and smell. ![]() “So, you can experiment that as a musical piece, but if you can just kind of do one step away and see like how it travels, how the light follows.,” says Anna Diaz, mix-media artist from Hamill Industries. “It’s about – it’s a pentagram. It’s a musical pentagram made light, made smoke. So that’s what it’s behind the vortex. And that’s the message behind the vortex, experiencing sound.” Superblue – Miami, USASuperblue is a relatively new installation in Miami, Florida, launched in 2021. It includes a very interactive environment with various digital installations, moving shapes and colors, light displays, a mirror labyrinth, items that visitors can pick up and move around, and much more, all over a sprawling 50,000 square foot space. Aside from the exhibition, the venue also has an events space and a popular outdoor café called The Blue Rider. And despite having only been open for barely 15 months, Superblue already has thousands of good reviews over various platforms including Google, Yelp, and Facebook. The show has been described as “Trippy, meditative, and gorgeous…” by the New York Times. “Each of these artists provokes us to see our relationship to the world and each other in completely new ways – it’s at the forefront of how we experience immersive art,” said Superblue co-founder and CEO, Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst. “Superblue was created in response to the public’s rapidly growing interest in experiential art that provokes new ways of understanding ourselves and the world around us,” added Marc Glimcher, co-founder of Superblue. teamLab – Tokyo, JapanteamLab is one of most well-known names on this lists, and is made up of a global group of artists, engineers, programmers, CG animators, architects, and mathematicians. They have permanent exhibitions in Shanghai, Tokyo, and Macao, as well as numerous other installations all over the world. They also plan to launch a new permanent installation in Saudi Arabia in 2023. Their goal is to help visitors “explore the relationship between the self and the world through art” using new and less traditional mediums. “Physical media is no longer the limit”, their website claims. “Digital technology has made it possible for artworks to expand physically. Art created using digital technology can easily expand. So, it provides us with a greater degree of autonomy within the space. We are now able to manipulate and use much larger spaces,” says teamLab, who spoke as a collective. “Here, we ask guests to wander, explore, and discover. Artworks also move out of the rooms freely. They form connections and relationships with people. The artworks communicate with, influence and sometimes intermingle with each other. They also have the same concept of time as the human body,” they added. ![]() teamLab is also working to combine art and wellness with their latest project, teamlab Reconnect, a permanent installation in Tokyo. Reconnect is an art and sauna exhibition where visitors experience the immersive artworks while alternating between hot saunas and cold baths. The goal is for users to enter what’s known as a “sauna trance” while enjoying the creative experience. THE LUME at Newfields – Indianapolis, USAI had to include this one, not only to have something representing the Midwest, but because I live in Indiana and it’s on my list of places to visit out there. That being said, THE LUME is part of the larger, Newfields art exhibit which is a 152-acre encyclopedic art museum. THE LUME takes place on 30,000 square feet of that acreage, and it can be best described as an hour-long digital art gallery extension. It’s not a movie, but rather a series of digital art experiences that play on a constant loop. The point of the exhibit is to see art “up close and all around you” by taking famous artworks and turning them into three dimensional, multi-sensory experiences. Despite the 60-minute play time, you can stay and enjoy the exhibition for as long as you want. Visitors are actually encouraged to take in the experiences from every angle – really get your money’s worth. You can enter at any time and jump straight into the loop. Featured artists include Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Gauguin, and after the show, you can visit the museum’s activity space to see some of the original paintings. There is also an attached restaurant, Café Terrace 1888, where you can take a break and refuel. Also worth noting, is that Newfields just announced they are looking for new artists to feature in THE LUME exhibit. Artists will need to create a three-minute, immersive, visual and audio digital media experience that will be displayed as featurettes or short digital art productions during THE LUME’s Monet experience. You can find more information about submitting your work here, and the deadline to apply is August 30th. Final ThoughtsWhen looking for “psychedelic” art installations, what I was looking for specifically was the concept of experiencing art through all five senses. Because tripping is so sensory on its own, art exhibitions that was appeal to psychonauts – in my opinion – would find a way to incorporate different sensory experiences. Immersive art exhibitions like the ones above are perfect examples of that. If I missed any of your favorites, drop me a line in the comment section below so I can add it to the list! Welcome all!
